Notes about Whiskey:

The Watt Family of Donegal and Derry in Ireland's North West owned one of Ireland's largest whiskey distilleries in the 19th century. When their family owned racehorse Tyrconnell named after an ancient kingdom in that part of Ireland one a major horse race at odds of 100 to 1, the family celebrated the famous victory by creating a whiskey brand in the colt's honour. This original Tyrconnell Irish Whiskey went on to become one of Irish Whiskey's greatest export successes, especially in the US where it was the most popular Irish Whiskey on the market in the 1920s. Prohibition and other factors killed the old Irish Whiskey industry and the old Tyrconnell brand. However, it was one of the first brands to be recreated by Dr. John Teeling when he rebuilt the Cooley Distillery in Ireland some years ago.

Today, Tyrconnell 10 Year Old Single Irish Malt is one of Ireland's most popular Single Malt whiskeys. This Sherry finished expression is one of Cooley's Wood Finishes collection and is finished in Sherry casks. The sherry influence lends notes of raisins and honey to the whiskey, which are complemented by the whiskey's notes of tobacco, oak and cinnamon. The finish is soft and lingering, with hints of butterscotch and nutty dough. Tyrconnell Sherry Cask Finish Whiskey earned a score of 94 points from Wine Enthusiast Magazine in 2012 and 97 points from the Beverage Testing Institute.

Tasting Notes:

Nose: Strong on sherry, it has a strong Fino feel to it, very grape-like, with notes of juicy raisins, golden berries, just a hint of mint.
Palate: Delectable and utterly decadent! This dessert in a glass with a hugely authentic note of wonderfully thick Fino sherry. Also hints of tarte tatin and custard.
Finish: More of that sherry, with apple tart and cinnamon.

Awards/Reviews:

93 Points - Wine Enthusiast

"Plenty of flavor: vanilla and butterscotch, plum and dried apricot, plus baking spice and a whiff of smoke in the finish."

91 Points - Whisky Advocate

"On the nose there are warm, grassy tones wrapped in a blanket of sherry, apple, and sultanas, with a tickle of fine white pepper, lemongrass, scented balms, and poppy seed cake. In the mouth there is apple, cherry, and honey nougat, backed by richer sherry fruits. The flavor develops steadily, with late additions of pepper coinciding with a confluence of sweetness and sherry notes. Baked apple sweetness on the finish."
