Our local distillers create this first gin offering from our island distillery in a small copper gin still ("The Dotach") which sits alongside her larger whisky-making sisters in the distillery's bright Spirit Hall.

Our key local ingredient is Sugar Kelp seaweed, gathered sustainably by hand from local sea-lochs, as our key botanical to express our island's unique maritime nature.

Sugar Kelp works in harmony with eight other careful chosen botanicals: Juniper, coriander seeds, cubebs, cassia bark, angelica root, bitter orange peel, orris root powder and liquorice root.

Every bottle Isle of Harris Gin bears a paper seal with our distillery's geographical coordinates to show where it is made, your guarantee of a truly Outer Hebridean gin, distilled in the Isle of Harris and nowhere else.

Tasting Notes:

On the nose, you will discover a well-defined juniper note with pine needles, followed by the fresh citrus notes of bitter orange, lime and grapefruit. Developed by a complex floral note of rose and wallflowers, with crushed green herbs, coriander and gooseberry, all underpinned by mixed spice. The Sugar Kelp helps add to the complexity and richness and gives this gin a dry maritime note. On the palate, this gin is refreshing, with good balance between bitter juniper and pine and the sweet fruit flavors of mango, grapefruit and orange. A green herb flavor of crushed coriander develops. Distinctive and smooth with a dry, flinty taste. Overall a long, clean finish. As the juniper and citrus fade away, sweet vanilla and black pepper remain with a gentle reminder of the sea. This gin uses nine botanicals including Sugar Kelp seaweed which creates subtle coastal notes in the spirit. Sugar Kelp is harvested by a local diver from the seas around the Outer Hebrides.

Grade: A- (Drinkhacker)

"The nose is punchy and starts somewhere at the intersection of bitter orange and juniper berries. An intense citrus element continues throughout and eventually shifts into a big, weaving current of grapefruit peel. In contrast, the juniper gradually fades. That leaves more room for some of the other listed botanicals — chief among them cinnamon, coriander, and orris — in addition to evoked scents including gentian root, walnut extract, and a tiny bit of carbolic soap. It’s memorably citrus forward, leaning bitter but with a bobbing and weaving sort of depth that sneaks in a light medicinal quality.

Early sips are creamy and quite approachable, even at 90 proof. A soft sweetness hits the midpalate and slowly dissipates, leaving behind more lemon drop candy, lime wedges, herbal mint tea, and honeysuckle. Sweetness gets a little more pronounced, and additional tastes bring more simple syrup and lemon meringue. That flavor quadrant eventually hits its peak, walking right up to the precipice of sugary without quite falling over. Citrus again plays first chair on the finish, along with light lavender syrup and oolong tea.

In my personal tinkering, it’s absolutely first rate in a dry martini."
