Notes from the Winery:
Our Ghost Block Single Vineyard wines are created from the highest quality fruit from our family’s four finest organically-farmed vineyards, including the Morgaen Lee and Ghost Block Vineyards in the Yountville AVA and the Pelissa and Rock Cairn Vineyards in the Oakville AVA. Crafted in extremely limited quantities by our longtime, talented Winemaker Kristi Koford, Ghost Block Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignons are extraordinary, collectible wines representing the pinnacle of the Pelissa family legacy.
About the Vineyard:
Ghost Block Vineyard is one of Napa Valley’s most distinctive sites, resting along the eastern slope of Yountville Hill and adjacent to the historic George C. Yount Pioneer Cemetery. Millions of years ago, a dramatic shift in the Vaca Mountains exposed layers of ancient volcanic rock, creating the foundation for this remarkable vineyard. The east-facing vines enjoy gentle morning and afternoon sun, balanced by cool evening breezes and early fog from San Pablo Bay. This combination allows the fruit to ripen slowly and evenly, developing both concentration and freshness. Farmed organically by our family for generations, Ghost Block Vineyard produces Cabernet Sauvignon with depth, elegance, and a true expression of its storied land.
Vineyard Notes:
Cabernet Sauvignon sourced exclusively from our family-owned and organically farmed Rock Cairn Vineyard forms the foundation of this wine. The 2023 growing season began with abundant winter rainfall that replenished soil moisture across the valley. A cool spring delayed budbreak and extended the growing season, followed by a mild summer that allowed the vines to develop slowly and evenly. These conditions provided exceptional hang time, enabling the fruit to reach full maturity while maintaining freshness and balance. The Rock Cairn vineyard features seven distinct blocks of Cabernet Sauvignon, ranging from 6 to 41-year-old plantings. This diversity of vine age allows us to capture the unique characteristics resulting in a carefully crafted blend that reflects the complexity and identity of this cherished site.
Tasting Notes:
Deep and complex, the 2023 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon opens with layered aromas of blackberry, blueberry jam, and boysenberry, accented by baking spices, cocoa, and subtle herbal notes. The full-bodied palate reveals dense dark fruit-black cherry, dark raspberry, and cassis-interwoven with savory undertones and warm spice. Hints of mocha, espresso, and dark chocolate add depth though the mid-palate. Structured yet polished, it shows firm, well-integrated tannins and a supple, mouthwatering texture. The finish is long and persistent, with lingering notes of coffee, cocoa, and spic framed by an elegant structure.
Ratings & Reviews
94 Points - Wine Spectator:
"Broad and juicy, this lets a wave of blackberry and black cherry compote spill forth, backed by iris, ink and anise details. Singed apple wood and a hint of bay leaf add range on the finish, which lingers steadily, with succulent fruit. Best from 2027 through 2040. 1,200 cases made." -James Molesworth (Nov 2026)
