About the Winery:
The story of the Gaja winery can be traced to a singular, founding purpose: to produce original wines with a sense of place which reflect the tradition and culture of those who made it. This philosophy has inspired five generations of impeccable winemaking. It started over 150 years ago when Giovanni Gaja opened a small restaurant in Barbaresco, making wine to complement the food he served. In 1859, he founded the Gaja winery, producing some of the first wine from Piedmont to be bottled and sold outside the region. In 1994, Gaja expanded to new places and acquired its first wine estate in Tuscany, Pieve Santa Restituta in Montalcino.

About this Wine:

The third Brunello produced from this estate, it is a combination of all the vineyards in Pieve Santa Restituta.

Vineyards: The grapes from the different vineyards ferment and macerate separately for around three weeks. After 24 months of ageing in oak, the wines are blended and then aged for another six months in concrete vats.

Tasting Notes:
The nose is refreshing and youthful, with intriguing notes of raspberry and strawberry, very complex and intense, showing a well-defined hint of white pepper.  The entrance is voluptuous with sweet pure fruit.  The tannins are easily detectable but velvety and beautifully integrated.  It is a harmonious and gentle wine, immediately impressive, yet with structure and framework to insure a long life in the cellar.

Technical Information

Vineyards:
A portion of the grapes from Rennina and Sugarille vineyards are blended with those from Torrenieri, in the northeastern area of Montalcino.  While the soil in Rennina and Sugarille is clay-calcareous with high amounts of galestro, the ground in Torrenieri is a mixture of clay, tuff, and sand.

Winemaking:
The grapes from the different vineyards ferment and macerate separately for approximately three weeks.  After 24 months of ageing in oak, the wines are blended and then aged for another six months in concrete vats.

Appellation: Brunello di Montalcino DOP
Varietal Composition: 100% Sangiovese Grosso
ABV: 14.5%

Ratings & Reviews

92 Points - Antonio Galloni's Vinous:
"Full ruby-red. Aromas of red cherry, blackberry, licorice and minerals. Juicy and tightly wound but pliant, offering smooth black and red fruit flavors complicated by licorice and fresh herbs. Classically dry and long, finishing with supple but firm tannins and a bright floral element. It’s hard to argue with this entry-level Brunello’s quality. I find it to be slightly underrated in many vintages, as all the attention is focused on Gaja’s two top Brunellos, the Rennina and the Sugarille. But this non-cru Brunello offers lots of high-quality wine for the price." - Ian D'Agata (Apr 2018)
