WINERY

IDDA is a joint venture between Angelo Gaja and Alberto Graci on Mount Etna that started in 2017. The Graci family is a prominent winemaker in the region. The vineyards are located on the southern slope of the volcano, with a wide range of altitudes, exposures and soil types. Today, the winery owns 50 acres of vineyards at 2,000-2,600 feet above sea level, in the villages of Belpasso and Biancavilla.

WINE

IDDA means “she” in the Sicilian dialect, which is the term of endearment and awe with which Sicilians refer to Mount Etna.

VINEYARDS

Made from Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio from vineyards located in Biancavilla, on the south-west slope of the Etna Volcano, between 700-800 m a.s.l. (2296-2624 ft).

WINEMAKING

Fermentation and maceration for around three weeks partially in oak and in concrete vats. Followed by 18 months of aging in oak and concrete.

TASTING NOTES

IDDA Rosso 2023 offers a consistent and fragrant nose, rich and warm with notes of red fruits like cherry and mulberry, complemented by mineral hints of graphite and spices. On the palate, it is explosive, releasing flavors of bitter cherries and black currants, followed by pronounced minerality that reflects its terroir. It presents a rich complexity with a wellbalanced interplay of tannins and acidity. The finish is long and lingering, characterized by notes of black pepper

Ratings & Reviews

94 Points - James Suckling:
The aromas of cranberries, pears, honeysuckle and other white flowers are enticing. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins and a fresh, bright finish. A little closed now but already very enjoyable. Drink or hold.

94 Points - Vinous Media:
The wonderfully floral and graceful 2023 Etna Rosso blossoms in the glass with mineral-laden crushed rocks, dusty rose and dried black cherries. Perfumed red berry fruits soothe as a tactile mineral crunch evolves toward the close. Tart cranberry saturation and nuances of spice remain, and edgy tannins pinch at the cheeks without detracting from the 2023's nearly sultry energy. (Drink between 2025-2029)

93 Points - Wine Advocate:

The Idda 2023 Etna Rosso is primarily Nerello Mascalese that shows a dark garnet hue with aromas of blackcurrant, crushed stone and black olive. You feel the intensity of a hot vintage in the aromas of this medium-bodied Etna Rosso. Idda's production is 70% white wines and 30% reds. Fruit for this wine comes from the estate's vineyard in Biancavilla. 2025-2033.
