About the Winery:

The vineyard “Pecchia” has been in place since the beginning of the 1900s and has always been the best of Gagliole in the memory of the local people. The word Pecchia means bee in ancient Tuscan language - indeed many of these insects can be found in the Pecchia vineyard. From this vineyard, the oldest of the estate, comes the best variety of Sangiovese grapes: medium-sized bunches are grown in order to guarantee the best ratio between skin and juice.

Pecchia is grown in our vineyards in Panzano in Chianti, planted at an elevation of 500 metres on the northwest ridge of the Conca d’Oro. Matured 18 months in French oak barrels and an additional year in the bottle, Pecchia is a single-varietal Sangiovese made only in the finest growing years.                                                                                      Best maturity for drinking: up to 8-10 years after release.

Ratings & Reviews:

97 Points - Decanter Magazine:
"Appealing ripe black cherry aromas combined with sweet spice and leathery tar, with compact tannins, refreshing, buoyant acidity and a delectable mocha enriched length. Fabulous!”

96 Points - James Suckling:
"This is such an attractive wine that floats between fresh, dark licorice, crushed stones and riper elements of dried currants, dark chocolate, vanilla and resin. Tight and refined with real linearity, suggested by the taut acidity and succulent yet firm tannins."  (Jul 2018)

95 Points - Wine Advocate:
"This wine was not produced in 2014. The 2015 Pecchia sees fruit sourced from the estate's best Sangiovese planted at 500 meters above sea level. What stands out most here is the wine's texture, which is firm and tightly knit. That compact nature of the fruit bodes very well for the future aging potential of this wine that I expect will play forward for ten years or more. The wine shows muscle and power that is applied with broad brush strokes. Despite the evident depth and dimension on offer here, this wine remains a bit closed and shy at this young stage. Pecchia requires more patience." - Monica Larner (Oct 2018)

92 Points - Vinous Media:
"The 2015 Pecchia is 100% Sangiovese from the highest portion of the estate's vineyards in Panzano. Fermentation in French oak adds volume, body and texture. Succulent black cherry, plum and lavender add nuance, but Pecchia is a wine that remains heavily marked by its fermentation in oak, which gives quite a bit of concentration and depth. The 2015 is a very good wine, but it is not especially varietal. (Drink between 2020-2030) - Antonio Galloni (Feb 2019)
