About this Wine:
Our tribute to the Masters of tradition, Albe is the blend of highelevation Barolo vineyards. As these blocks lay on various slopes with different exposures, we have the chance to see three sunrises (Albe) every day.
"The true Beauty of Albe is the caress of the sun that rises three times every morning over our vineyards. It’s the exceptional simplicity of nature that makes the awakening of life an everyday miracle." - Milena Vaira
Varietal: 100% Nebbiolo.
Vineyard and Terroir: Albe is a blend of wonderful Barolo DOCG vineyards
with exposures that range from south-south-east
Ageing: Aged for 18 months in large Slavonian oak casks of 40, 50 and 75 hL. The wines were racked once and blended right before the bottling
Tasting Notes: The 2018 Barolo Albe opens up with a bright, expressive nose. Red currant, cherries, macerated strawberries and mint are interlaced with floral tones and hints of rosehip, rhubarb, red fig, hawthorn, lavender and licorice. The palate is generous, layered and youthful, with ripe tannins and a classic finish on tones of marasca cherry.
Ratings & Reviews
94 Points, Rank #9 Top 100 of 2024 - Wine Spectator:
This effusive red displays cherry, raspberry, rose, iron, juniper and hay flavors, underscored by vibrant acidity. Harmonious and supple in texture, with a long aftertaste of red fruit, mineral and floral elements. Best from 2028 through 2049. 3,500 cases imported. —Bruce Sanderson
94 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
You can't beat this value. The G.D. Vajra 2020 Barolo Albe is buttoned up with fresh primary fruit, and the wine does not have that hint of over-ripeness that is found across this vintage. The fruit is dark and savory, and there is a big mineral component to match, but the bouquet is nicely redolent of dark currant, plum, granite and a raspy dry note that brings crushed shale to mind. The tannins are quite impactful, and they give this wine extra runway for moderate bottle aging. 2025 - 2038
93 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
A ripe ruby hue, the 2020 Barolo Albe offers a beautiful bouquet of raspberries, fresh flowers, and delicate spice. Medium-bodied, it has a lot of elegance, with ripe and supple tannins and a bit of iron-rich earth. Drink 2024-2037.<!--more-->The G.D. Vajra estate is based within the commune of Barolo, with the entire family contributing and Giuseppe and Aldo Vajra at the helm of the winemaking responsibilities. Giuseppe, who took more of a leadership role in 2008, has been instrumental in continuing to develop the family estate, while Isidoro Vajra leads in vineyard management. Most recently they have completed the expansion of their cellar space and offices. They are also now releasing their wines a touch later to allow for additional time in bottle to soften any harsh edges. As of the 2019 vintage, both the G.D. Vajra and Luigi Baudana estates are certified organic. (Drink between 2024-2037)
93 Points - Wine Enthusiast:
The nose is a harmonious blend of red fruits, featuring warmed cherries macerated in sweet and savory spices of cinnamon and clove. Dried raspberries and red currant add depth, while a distinct dried leaf and floral component entices. Vibrant cherry, cranberry, and strawberry stand tall on the palate, with thyme and bay leaf adding subtle herbaceous undertones that balance the flavors. Mouthwatering acidity keeps the wine lively, and approachable tannins allow you to enjoy this wine now and give you the tools to pair with a variety of cuisines. Drink Now - 2040 — Jeff Porter
93 Points - James Suckling:
This is a bright and lively Barolo showing sliced oranges, raspberries, crushed stones and rose petals on the nose. Medium-bodied, with sharp acidity and tight tannins. Lots of energy. Try from 2027.
