About the Winery:
Burlotto is a family winery was born in Verduno, a historic commune in Barolo, 170 years ago.
Marina, with her husband Giuseppe Alessandria, and their children Fabio and Cristina, represent the fourth and fifth generations at the helm of Burlotto and continue to produce the classic wines of the Alba Langa.
About the Wine:
Ornament is a crime “, said Adolf Loos. And that which stays away from it, preserving proportion, harmony and recognizability, can rightly be called “classic”. This Barolo is a classic. Sober, rigorous, dynamic, with identity, it immerses you in the aura of its land with a secret force of persuasion.
Optimal serving temperature between 16 and 18 ° (60-65F).
Technical Information
Geography:
Verduno is the northernmost municipality of the Barolo area with soils that were
formed between the Tortonian and the Messinian geological eras. Within short distances in the vineyards you can find land attributable to different geological formations, even if the prevailing ones are the laminated fossil Marls of Sant’Agata (Monvigliero) and the Cassano Spinola Formation (Neirane, Boscatto and part of Rocche Olmo). They are calcareous soils with a balanced presence of clay, sand and silt that allows for good water retention.
Vinification:
The harvest is carried out by hand, in order to preserve the integrity of the fruit and to allow for, when necessary, a selection of the grapes which are then transported to the cellar in 20 kg boxes. The bunches are de-stemmed and the must moved by gravity into open French oak vats where alcoholic fermentation takes place. During the maceration, delicate pumping over and punching down are carried out daily. Temperature control is utilized to prevent excessively high temperatures.
Maturation:
Malolactic fermentation takes place in in large French oak barrels followed by subsequent maturation for a period of 20 to 33 months depending on the vintage. After bottling, normally carried out in the summer, the wine rests in the cellar for at least 9 months before being marketed.
Ratings & Reviews
95 Points - Wine Advocate:
"The Comm. G.B. Burlotto 2019 Barolo sees fruit from a large vineyard site in the Breri MGA with southern exposures and slightly lower elevations. It borders Monvigliero but only reaches 250 meters in elevation. It also shares the blue marl soils that distinguish this area. The wine offers pretty fruit intensity with ruby fruit, bright cherry and cassis. This vintage takes a little longer to open, and although it doesn't share the complexity of its neighboring cru, this is a fine expression from Verduno. (Drink between 2025-2045)" - Monica Larner (Aug 2023)
93 Points - Decanter Magazine:
"It's true that to understand a producer one should taste the entry-level wine, and the talent of Fabio Alessandria does not lack in this blend. Its vermouth-like nose is full of aromatic herbs, bitter orange, wild strawberry and cinnamon. A graceful signature of the estate, it's supported by brilliant acidity and velvety tannins with a chalky yet polished finish. An enjoyable Barolo, not without potential for ageing. (Drink between 2023-2045)" - Aldo Fiordelli (Feb 2023)
93 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
"From a parcel bordering Monvigliero, the 2019 Barolo is a pale ruby and reveals a lifted perfume of fresh berries and orange zest. Linear and vibrant, with fresh pomegranate, citrus, and dusty earth, it is racy and fresh, with a savory finish. Drink 2024-2034." - Audrey Frick (May 2023)
92 Points - Vinous Media:
"The 2019 Barolo is a very pretty, elegant wine. In this vintage, the straight Barolo has (unusually) a touch of whole cluster influence that drives the aromatic profile, adding gorgeous floral and savory intensity this wine does not typically have. Burlotto's Barolo is far from an easygoing wine, it is a Barolo to cellar for a few years and drink for another decade or so beyond. This super-classic Barolo is an absolute gem. (Drink between 2024-2036)" - Antonio Falloni (Jan 2023)
