About the Winery:
The Frescobaldi family began producing wine in Tuscany in 1308, and for centuries has been synonymous with wine production in Italy’s most celebrated wine region.
Gorgona wines grow on a small island in the Tuscan archipelago that historically housed monks and hermits. Though that history sounds similar to any number of winegrowing regions today, Gorgona is unique among them all not for its terroir – though the island is stunning – but for its farmers.
The island became an experimental penal colony for the kingdom of Italy in the 19th century, essentially an open-air prison and farm. The prisoners can move freely on the grounds and tend to agricultural work, the idea being that they learn a trade in order to reintegrate into society after serving their sentence. The Frescobaldi family’s viticulturists and oenologists have worked with the inmates since 2012, expanding the vineyard in 2015. It now measures two hectares and grows two wines, a red and a white.
About this Wine:
This wine, a blend of Vermentino and Ansonica, grows from a vineyard planted in a small, organically-managed vineyard planted in an amphitheater overlooking the sea and protected from the various winds that buffet this tiny island off the Tuscan coast. The oldest sections were planted in 1999, and the vineyard was expanded in 2015, now covering two hectares.
80% Ansonica and 20% Vermentino, Gorgona is aged in a combination of stainless steel and oak barrels for 7 months, followed by several months in bottle.
Tasting Note:
The Gorgona white has an elegantly intense Mediterranean character in its aromas and flavors, with sea breeze, rosemary and chamomile accents. The fruit trends exotic and yellow-fleshed, with delicate notes of citrus.
Ratings & Reviews
96 Points - James Suckling:
"Spiced Asian pears, minerals and heather with jasmine undertones to the perfumed palate. Medium-bodied, this has a creamy texture and softness. Flavorful intensity with just a hint of flint giving it interest at the end. Plenty of character. Fresh and aromatic. 75% vermentino and 25% ansonica. Drink or hold." (Jun 2025)
90 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine:
"A bright, focused white, revealing peach and passion fruit shaded by jasmine, pine and salty mineral notes. This is balanced and succulent, with a mouthwatering finish. Drink now through 2028. 750 cases made, 100 cases imported." - Bruce Sanderson (Sep 2025)
