About the winery:
Owner Sergio Marchetti belongs to an old patriarchal family of the 18th century. The family's descendants have lived and farmed on this land for generations. In the 1980s, the owner of the lands gifted Fossacolle to the family when he sold the properties. Fossacolle is four hectares of vineyards in the medieval town of Tavernelle in southern Montalcino. This area benefits from the wind of nearby Maremma which creates a perfect climate to grow and to mature grapes. Sergio and his family manage the vineyards and his son-in-law, Adriano Bambagioni, with the help of his son Stefano, carry out all the enological and commercial aspects of Fossacolle.

Notes from the Winemaker:
The Rosso di Montalcino is produced only with Sangiovese Grosso grapes from the youngest vineyards. The clusters are hand-picked into small boxes and gently pressed. The must undergoes a pre-fermentation at low temperatures in steel fermenters, and the same care and know how used in the Brunello production are applied during the temperature controlled fermentation. Frequent pump-overs, punch-downs and delestages allow the best extraction from the skins to obtain a wine worthy to age.

After 14-16 days of maceration and complete alcoholic and malolactic fermentations, the wine is transferred to the ageing cellar. It stays in used French barriques and big oak cask of 25 hl where it evolves and gains complexity and roundness. The wine matures in glass-lined cement vats prior to a static settling, the bottling and its release.

Tasting Notes:
Dark ruby red to the eye. Impeccable fresh, fruity aromas are sustained by delicate tertiary notes, exemplary structure and roundness. These intrinsic characteristics remind of its 'Elder Brother' and make it a truly impressive wine.

Ratings & Reviews

91 Points - James Suckling:
"Notes of dried strawberries and cherries with savory herb and bark undertones. Medium-bodied with fine and polished tannins. Juicy and crunchy with a lightly chewy finish. Drink now." (Aug 2023)

93 Points - Decanter Magazine (2020):
"Fossacolle manages four hectares in Tavernelle, a southern village within the Montalcino appellation but quite high in altitude and surrounded by forest. Here, Sangiovese Grosso matures with plenty of aromatics. Medlar, rhubarb, smoke, raspberry, anise and graphite...the complexity on the nose is completed in the mouth by large velvety tannins, refreshing acidity and a long, thick finish. Exquisitely typical Sangiovese.” – Aldo Fiordelli (Jun 2022)
