About the Winery:
Owner Sergio Marchetti belongs to an old patriarchal family of the 18th century. The family's descendants have lived and farmed on this land for generations. In the 1980s, the owner of the lands gifted Fossacolle to the family when he sold the properties. Fossacolle is four hectares of vineyards in the medieval town of Tavernelle in southern Montalcino. This area benefits from the wind of nearby Maremma which creates a perfect climate to grow and to mature grapes. Sergio and his family manage the vineyards and his son-in-law, Adriano Bambagioni, with the help of his son Stefano, carry out all the enological and commercial aspects of Fossacolle.

Notes from the Winemaker:
Riesci is an attempt to produce a balanced wine with a high percentage of Petit Verdot. First produced in 2004, it is Fossacolle's own "French styled blend". The Cabernet and Petit Verdot are fermented together, while the Merlot, which ripens earlier, ferments on its own. Once the primary and malolactic fermentations are completed, the final blend is made. The blend rests for 12 months in new 225-litre French oak barriques, after another period in concrete vats for a final settle the wine is bottled.

Tasting Notes:
The wine shows a deep, youthful red, tending to ruby. Rich, well-ripened fruit is surprisingly intense on the nose, with compelling and seductive fragrances. The entry reveals a superb structure and a palate of spacious proportions, but one with a velvet-smooth tannin weave, rounded texture, and developed qualities that are still in vigorous evolution. In sum, a young, self-confident wine, one to be enjoyed tonight or one to consign to future dreams of a well-cellared, long-lived red

Ratings & Reviews

93 Points - James Suckling:
"A medium-bodied red with black-cherry and berry aromas, as well as hints of bark and pine needles. Lightly chewy with a pretty, polished-tannin backbone and a long finish. Drinkable now, but better in 2023." (Jul 2021)

92 Points - Wine Advocate:
"I love the sleek retro label design on the Fossacolle 2019 Riesci. This blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Petit Verdot and 20% Merlot is a terrific and easygoing wine, with massive drinking appeal. This 2019 expression shows much better results than we've seen in past editions, and I notice that the blend of grapes has changed over the years to include more Cabernet Sauvignon and exclude Sangiovese. This is a universally food-friendly wine that could cozy up to a veggie burger or a grilled steak, depending on your culinary outlook. The wine is redolent of dark fruit and blackberry, and there are plenty of rich plummy tones that segue to dark spice, mesquite and a touch of smoked cedar. I suggest drinking any bottles of this 3,600-bottle release young, to take advantage of that pretty intensity." - Monica Larner (Feb 2022)

92 Points - Wine Enthusiast:
"Luxardo cherries and balsamic vinegar are on the nose of this Tuscan IGT, and again on the palate, joined by darker berries, black pepper and soil, with hints of woodsmoke and underbrush. A fresh and approachable option from this Brunello producer." - DC (Apr 2023)
