About the Winery:
Owner Sergio Marchetti belongs to an old patriarchal family of the 18th century. The family's descendants have lived and farmed on this land for generations. In the 1980s, the owner of the lands gifted Fossacolle to the family when he sold the properties. Fossacolle is four hectares of vineyards in the medieval town of Tavernelle in southern Montalcino. This area benefits from the wind of nearby Maremma which creates a perfect climate to grow and to mature grapes. Sergio and his family manage the vineyards and his son-in-law, Adriano Bambagioni, with the help of his son Stefano, carry out all the enological and commercial aspects of Fossacolle.

Notes from the Winemaker:
Our Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is produced with Sangiovese Grosso grapes. The bunches are rigorously selected for quality and hand-picked into small boxes. Following a gentle pressing, the must undergoes a pre-fermentation at low temperatures in steel and wood fermenters. The Riserva was first produced in honor of Fossacolle’s 10th anniversary. Created from Sangiovese grown in the estate’s oldest vineyard, this Riserva is only made in exceptional vintages.

An extended maceration and frequent pump-overs, punch-downs and delestages optimize the extraction from the skins. The malolactic fermentation is completed in concrete vats before the wine's ageing phase, for a total of 24 months in 25 hl oak casks and in 225 litre French oak barriques.

Tasting Notes:

Ruby red color. Intense notes of dark cherries, chocolate and spices on the nose. Complex structure and tannins with notes of fruit and coffee; long, elegant finish.

FOOD PAIRING Perfect with red meats, roasts, game and aged cheeses.

Ratings & Reviews

94 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
“The Fossacolle 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva (with a mere 2,000 bottles to be released after February 2021) offers richness and depth with a very linear and direct quality of fruit. There is plum, blackberry, spice, earth, leather and tar. This Riserva occupies the darker side of the spectrum, although the mouthfeel is ultimately lighter and more buoyant than you might expect.” – Monica Larner (Nov 2020)

93 Points – Jeb Dunnnuck
“The 2015 Brunello Riserva offers notes of licorice, baked cherry, tobacco and forest floor. The palate has ripe cherry, resinous herbs, and tar, with gripping structured tannins that don’t let go easily and are somewhat dominant in its structure. This is classic and unapologetic Sangiovese that I would welcome at the table. Cellar for 2-5 years and drink 2024-2032.” (Mar 2021)

91 Points – Vinous Media:
“The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva blossoms in the glass with a pretty bouquet full of bright cherry, strawberry and a dusting of sweet spice, all offset by hints of leather and earth. It coats the palate in silky richness, which is then perfectly cleansed and enlivened by zesty acids and tart red fruits. There’s plenty of balanced structure for medium-term cellaring here, tapering off to sour wild berries and hints of citrus.“ – Eric Guido (Nov 2020)
