About this Wine:
Since 1858, the Fontanafredda Estate & Winery has been instrumental to the growth and international awareness of Barolo, while championing sustainability and community engagement in the Langhe region of Piedmont. Under the lead of visionary entrepreneur, Oscar Farinetti, Fontanafredda has built a portfolio of wines that express the depth and diversity of the Langhe, produced from grapes that are farmed from organic and sustainably managed vineyards. Since the 2018 harvest, Fontanafredda is the largest certified organic winery in Piedmont.

15-day fermentation in stainless steel vats at 86-88° F. Maceration for an additional 15 days for optimal phenolic extraction.

This wine is aged one year in barrique (Allier) and two years in 2,000L oak casks, followed by additional bottle aging for about 12 months.

Serralunga Barolo is characterized by great structure and power. Dry and tannic, but with velvety texture and great balance. It has notes of vanilla, spices, withered roses and underbrush. balance. The finish is very long-lasting. Ideal with hearty red meat dishes and medium or mature cheeses.

Ratings & Reviews

93 Points - Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
"Aromas of eucalyptus join ripe red berry, rose, new leather and dark spice. Elegantly structured, the focused, taut palate exhibits crushed raspberry, star anise and menthol alongside firm, fine-grained tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it vibrant and balanced. Drink 2025–2033." - KK (9/1/22)

92 Points & #78 Top 100 of 2022 - Wine Spectator Magazine:
"This is a lovely expression of cherry, rose and mineral flavors, with freshness and purity. Shows a solid underpinning of dense yet refined tannins. Long finish. Best from 2025 through 2042. 17,000 cases made, 5,100 cases imported." - BS (Dec 2022)

92 Points - James Suckling:
"A tinge of orange to the cherry color of this. Slightly musty, but pleasant aromas of dried cherries and raspberries with hints of leather and dust, as well as dried flowers. Medium-to full-bodied with a good core of fruit and fine tannin and plenty of acidity. Long, bright finish. Vegan. Sustainable." (Feb 2022)

91 Points - The Wine Independent:
"The 2018 Fontanafredda Barolo del comune di Serralunga d’Alba has light aromas of sweet ripe cherry. It has a very nice texture and ripe tannins, softly integrated into the body of the wine. It lacks a little depth and concentration in the middle but is overall a pleasing and charming wine with a gentle, creamy finish. The Fontanafredda estate (the name means cold fountain) was founded in 1858 by the first king of united Italy, Vittorio Emanuele II, as a gift for his lover Rosa Vercellana. In 2008 Oscar Farinetti and Luca Baffigo bought the estate putting it back into Piemontese hands. In 2018 they made their first certified organic wine." - SH (Jul 2022)
