About The Winery:
In 1469 A.D., in the heart of Sicily, within the Principality of Villanova, the noble Aragonese family Abatellis built the baglio (a typical Sicilian court square building). Now, six hundred years later, our wines are made in the same cellars, and on the same land.

Already in 1595 Andrea Bacci, agronomist and doctor of Pope Sisto V, praised in the pages of “De Naturali Vinorum Historia”, the first treatise of Italian Enology, the wine – growing tradition and the quality of the wine produced in these lands.

In the late 1800s, the history of Feudo Montoni was bound together by the Sireci family when Fabio’s grandfather, Rosario, purchased Feudo Montoni, recognizing the particular characteristics of the land and its biodiversity. He found ancient vines, such as Perricone, Nero d’Avola and Catarratto. He especially fell in love with the wines from these grapes that present features of unusual elegance. That’s why he bought Feudo Montoni, guardian of the secret.

About The Wine

Lagnusa is the name of the cru from which the grapes hail. The name has its origins in the vineyard which has always been called “lagnusa” by the farmers of Montoni. In Sicilian, “lagnusa” means that which is lazy and produces small quantities. Today, we know that a vineyard that produces less, creates higher quality. Certified Organic Farming.

Age of the Vineyard:
35 year old vines, grafted from our old Vrucura Nero d’Avola “mother plants.” By grafting in this antique manner, we obtain grapes with a unique and exclusive “DNA” of Feudo Montoni, our copyright of Nature.

Profile:
Ruby red in color. Its structure does not want to conquer with strength, but rather with elegance. A complex perfume with notes of cherries-in-spirit, red plum, blackberry and warm spices that are in harmony with one another. The boldest aromas are of cinnamon and clove. Notes of menthol amplify the freshness of the taste. It is soft, velvety, sapid and laced with the right amount of delicate tannin on the palate.

Pairing:
Red meats, roasts, game, tuna, salami and aged cheeses.

Ratings & Reviews

91 Points & #71 Top 100 Wines of 2021 - Wine Spectator:
"This elegant red is medium-bodied and well-knit, with a hint of dried oregano layered with dried raspberry, rosehip and minerally iron flavors that show loamy earth accents. Light, taut tannins trim the well-spiced finish. Drink now through 2026." - AN (Mar 2021)

89 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"Made with organically farmed fruit, the 2017 Sicilia Nero d'Avola Lagnusa is a terrific entry-level wine from sunny Sicilia. You get a lot of authentic charm here with variety-driven tones of black fruit, scorched earth and chopped olive. Those aromas find nice harmony while also showing charming intensity. This vintage is best consumed when that primary fruit is still young, within the next 3-4 years." - Monica Larner (Dec 2018)
