About The Winery: Jean-Claude et Nicolas Fayolle Estate. Nicolas Fayolle represents the 3rd generation. His father, Jean-Claude, helped convert the Estate from apricot to grape growing. Founded in 1958 Owner: Jean-Claude and Nicolas Fayolle Winery Philosophy: All our vineyards are tended and harvested manually due to the incline of the slopes. We also limit treatment of the vines to better manage soil erosion. Our “cuvees” are issued for specific parcels in our vineyards and we neither destem nor use new oak barrels to preserve each “cuvee’s” specificity. The estate was founded by Nicolas' grand-father Jules Fayolle in 1958. Nicolas is the 3rd generation in this family owned estate. Nicolas has a degree in "Viticulture- Oenologie" and "Commercial science". He studied in the Macon region and joined the family estate in 2003 Winery Acreage: 17.36 acres (7 hectares) Winery Production: 2000 / 9L cases Varietals Produced: Syrah and Marsanne Winemaker: Nicolas Fayolle 7 hectares total: 4 hectares of Crozes Hermitage Rouge in the lieu dit "En Rochettes" 2 hectares of Crozes Hermitage Blanc in the lieu dit "En Rochettes" 0.8 hectares of Hermitage Rouge in the lieu dit "Les Donnières" 0.2 hectares of Hermitage Blanc in the lieu dit "Les Donnières" Soil is mainly Loess, Red granit, granit from the former Rhone river bed. 80% of the vineyards are located on steep hills and terraces. Hand harvest.

100% Syrah from 38-year-old vines planted on Granitic and stony soils.

The 2015 vintage was bottled in April 2017.

Tasting Notes: Deep ruby red color. The wine has plenty to offer with red and black fruit aromas, as well as a good minerality. The finish is long, clean and juicy and offers some white pepper spiciness typical of the best Crozes-Hermitage.

Soil type: Clay and granit, covered with pebbles.

Winemaking: Hand harvested in small crates. The grapes are then pumped into tanks (full cluster, not destemmed). It stays in this tank for 15 days for the skin contact maceration, the alcoholic fermentation and the malo-lactic fermentation.
They will also use the "rack and return" technique (delestage).
Then the wine is transferred into neutral French Oak barrels.

Ratings & Reviews

91 Points - Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
"Crisp black-plum and bramble notes are accented by pepper, char and anise in this lean, briskly composed Syrah. It's concentrated but spry, framed by grippy but finely edged tannins and a firm, granitic finish. Drink now through 2025." - AI (September 2018)

90 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The density and richness of the vintage shows through in the 2015 Crozes Hermitage La Grande Seguine. It's full-bodied and concentrated, with a velvety, tannic feel and ample length. Plum, black olive and smoke notes linger on the finish. Drink this well-priced Crozes over the next 5-6 years." - Joe Czerwinski (Oct 2018)

Jeb Dunnuck:

"Notes of dark fruits, hickory wood, pepper, and some meatiness all emerge from the 2015 Crozes-Hermitage La Grande Seguine, which is medium-bodied, nicely textured, and elegant on the palate. This was a blockbuster vintage for the southern Rhône, particularly Crozes Hermitage, yet this shines just as much for its silky texture as its outright power. It should keep nicely for 8-10 years." - Jeb Dunnuck (March 27th 2019)
