About the Winery:
Faust is the second wine of Agustin and Valeria Huneeus ' Quintessa. They developed Quintessa in 1990 to establish the property as one of the great red wine estates of the world. Valeria guided the 280-acre Rutherford vineyard with strict care for the soil and environment with a commitment to biodynamic and organic farming. The vineyard's many micro-climates, soil types, elevations, and exposures have been planted to a wide selection of rootstocks and clones, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and small plots of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Carmenère. The wine is made by Charles Thomas of Quintessa.
Notes from the Winemaker:
The defining characteristics of Faust come from the backbone of fruit sourced from our own Coombsville Estate, complemented by grapes from hillside and cooler regions of the Napa Valley. This combination of fruit sourcing delivers the unmistakable richness and fruit intensity of our Cabernet Sauvignon. Through relentless exploration, our winemakers are always in pursuit of the undeniable quality and unique style, fitting of a modern Napa Valley classic.
The wine itself features classic aromas of black cherries and chocolate with layers of savory black cherry tart and notes of tarragon and subtle oak spice. We also find the signature mineral notes of the Faust estate vineyard with polished, fine-grained tannins accenting the finish. It's a mouthful of complexity, and this is going to be one of those Cabernet Sauvignon's that we'll talk about for years to come.
Tasting Notes
This wine jumps out of the glass with aromas of fresh black cherry and plum. Layers of savory cherry compote, earth, cedar and graphite are rounded out by a long finish with hints of dark chocolate, balanced acidity and minerality. - David Jelinek, Winemaker
Ratings & Reviews
95 Points - James Suckling:"Inviting aromas of ripe blackcurrants and blackberries as well as crushed walnuts, cedar and bark. Full-bodied, creamy and structured with firm, polished tannins. Balanced and even with a lingering finish. Better after 2026." (Sep 2023)
"Packed and broad in feel, with a ganache note draped over blackcurrant, blackberry and steeped cherry. Licorice root and alder smoke flavors check in on the finish as the fruit pumps through, ending with a flash of violet. Hard to resist now, but this has some development ahead. Drink now through 2036." - James Molesworth (May 2024)
93 Points - Wine & Spirits:
"Focused on cabernet from the Faust estate in Coombsville, this includes fruit from the Huneeus family’s vineyards in Yountville and Oak Knoll, all relatively cool districts that combine in a brisk, red-fruited cabernet with cherry freshness. A bright young thing with a lot to say, it tastes like just-picked fruit, its spicy tannins supple and gracious, cool and lasting." - JG
"Hefty and grippy, this full-bodied wine is sturdy in tannins, deep in black and blue fruits, and will come around nicely with more aging. Blackberries, blueberries, cocoa and hints of oak char make a good, complex expression on the palate. Best from 2027-2037." - Jim Gordon (Apr 2024)
"The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented with Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc, is deep garnet-purple in color. It races out with exuberant notes of black cherry preserves, juicy blackberries, and cassis followed by hints of mint tea, graphite, and tar. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers bright, crunchy black fruits with a firm, grainy texture and bags of freshness, finishing with a real skip in its step." - LBP (Nov 2023)
