About the Winery:
Weingut Emrich-Schönleber is a prestigious German winery in Monzingen, Nahe, known for its high-quality, single-vineyard Riesling wines from steep, stony vineyards like Frühlingsplätzchen and Halenberg. The Schönleber family has a viticultural history dating to the mid-18th century, and the estate transitioned to exclusively winemaking in the late 1960s.

The estate is situated in Monzingen, in the upper Nahe region of Germany, a relatively cool area surrounded by forests. The winery is known for wines from its top-tier, single-vineyard plots, particularly Monzinger Frühlingsplätzchen and Monzinger Halenberg.

Notes from the Winemaker:
The alcohol levels of the 23 vintages are consistently within the ideal range, and the fine Riesling acidity has been preserved. The young wines exhibit a highly elegant fruit expression and are somewhat more approachable than in previous years. They strongly remind us of the 2019 vintage.

Ratings & Reviews

98 Points - James Suckling:
"The gigantic smoky and crushed rock nose of this astonishing dry riesling is an announcement of intent and determination. Incredibly complex candied and fresh citrus fruit slowly emerges from within this masterpiece, but the whole composition never changes its fundamental shape or direction. Either you’re strong enough for this radical wine, or it’s stronger than you. Drink from release." - JS (July 2024)

96 Points - Vinous Media:
"The 2023 Riesling Monzinger Halenberg Grosses Gewächs still swings with a little yeasty, reductive funk. The palate is stony, slender, svelte, concentrated and sinewy. At the core, a lovely trace of orange peel appears amidst taut, bright yellow citrus aromatics, stony, vivacious, strait-laced and so racy. Nahe, stone and lemon in a glass. Wonderful. (Bone-dry) (Drink between 2028-2060)" - Anne Krebiehl (Sept 2024)

96 Points - Wine Advocate:
"Frank Schönleber's 2023 Halenberg Riesling GG is one of the most impressive dry wines from this vintage in all of Germany. It's very clear, fine and elegant but rich and complex on the nose that benefits from the deep slate soil and shows iodine notes. Dense and powerful yet also zesty, this is very complex, long and persistently salty. This is a great Riesling. Tasted at the Vorpremiere VDP.Grosses Gewächs in Wiesbaden in August 2024." – Stephan Reinhardt (Oct 2024)
