Notes from the Winemaker:
Elderton Wines is a small, family-owned winery, situated in the heart of Australia’s Barossa Valley. Their vineyards were first planted in 1894 by early German settlers and in 1979 the Ashmead family purchased the property and  has since worked tirelessly to salvage and restore their treasured vineyards. Elderton shot to world acclaim after producing some of Australia’s most highly regarded Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon wines. Today, the vision of the founders shines through, and Elderton is celebrated as a major reason for the rejuvenation of the Barossa. The winery is currently helmed by the second generation of the Elderton family, brothers Cameron and Allister, with Cameron’s wife Jules Ashmead heading the winemaking team.

The season leading in to the 2021 harvest presented sufficient rain and calm conditions, allowing for decent flowering and fruit set heading into the ripening season. The solid base for this wine comes from Elderton’s  Nuriootpa  vineyard.  The slightly higher elevation of  their  Craneford  (Eden  Valley) vineyard offers another layer of vibrancy and freshness coupled with a slatey cool finish. There are 3 new plantings of specific clones of Cabernet Sauvignon from which Elderton also took their first fruit this year. Aged predominantly in older French puncheons for 16 months.

Ratings & Reviews

92 Points - James Suckling:
"Aromas of crushed blackcurrants, blackberries, crushed stone and suede. Full-bodied with silky tannins. Juicy and fresh with some black tea character. Chewy finish." (Oct 2022)

92 Points - Vinous Media:
"This shapely 2021 Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon delivers appreciable concentration with poise, opening up with bright blackberry and blueberry aromas entwined with seamless spicy oak. There is a good density of flavor. Al-dente tannins add shape and structure for enjoyment over the medium term." -  Angus Hughson (Oct 2023)

92 Points - James Halliday:

"All estate-grown cabernet sauvignon fruit; the breakdown this year from the Elderton vineyards in Craneford (52%) and Nuriootpa (58%). Aged in predominantly older French oak puncheons for 16 months. Deep crimson with a purple edge and opulent aromas of rich blackberry, black cherry and blackcurrant fruits with hints of dark spice, cedar, vanillin, purple floral tones, crème de cassis and a mere whiff of scattered herbs. Impressive fruit and tannin ripeness and a lovely blackberry/blackcurrant pastille finish." (DB)
