Notes from the Winemaker:

The dormancy period of 2022 is remembered by its extremely low cumulative rainfall, comparable to 2018 and 2021. At the same time, the warmer temperatures observed in January and February led to an early budbreak and a healthy cover crop. This led us to tilling more surface than usual and at an earlier date to take advantage of spring rain and capture an optimal mineralization window. The spring temperature accumulation set the course for an early onset of water stress. However, the milder climatic demand in Calistoga and good nutrient content in the soils led to healthier and longer growth of the Sauvignon Blanc canopy than during the previous two years. July was hot but
August was mild without the extreme spikes observed in 2021. This resulted in harmonious sugar accumulation and juicier berries. A light leafing helped expose the clusters to filtered light, enhancing tropical fruit aromas and nectarine flavors. The first Sauvignon Blanc Musqué was picked on August 15th and the later-ripening block adjacent to the winery came last on August 30st. The wines were aged on their lees for 12 months, in a combination of stainlesssteel eggs (23%), concrete eggs (12%), used oak (33%) and new oak (32%).

The grapes were certified ‘Organic’ by CCOF and ‘Biodynamic’ by Demeter.

The 2022 Sauvignon Blanc emerges from the glass with scents of white musk, wild white peaches, passion fruit and candied citrus. A swirl or two reveal fragrances of warm bread, vanilla, and cardamom, laced with mineral notes of wet pebbles and basil leaf. The mouthfeel is supple, round, and silky with a structure that extends the wine into a long creamy finish, lingering on verbena, grapefruit and nectarine. Maturation in Austrian and French puncheons or “demi muis” has enhanced the journey of this wine, resulting in perhaps the most accomplished Sauvignon Blanc produced at Eisele Vineyard.

Ratings & Reviews

98 Points - James Suckling:
"So much complex pear blossom, peaches, Meyer lemon, pineapple and snap peas. Full bodied with a layered, phenolic texture and a tangy and vivid finish. Some flint at the end. 3.3 pH. Really zesty. Grows in the glass. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold." (Jan 2024)
95 Points - The Wine Independent:
"The 2022 Sauvignon Blanc was picked before the heat event in September. It skips out of the glass with bright, cheery scents of lemonade, lime blossom, candle wax, and yuzu zest with wafts of chalk dust and coriander seed. The medium to full-bodied palate has a satiny texture and fantastic freshness supporting the intense citrus flavors, finishing on a lingering chalky note. What wonderful energy! Drinking 2025-2033" - LPB (Mar 2024)

94 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
"Bottled just a month before this tasting, the 2022 Sauvignon Blanc is another perfumed, exotic white revealing bright lime and honeyed citrus aromatics, some mint herb nuances, medium body, bright acidity, and a clean, focused finish. It has a more subtly rounded mid-palate compared to the 2021 but still plays in this vibrant, focused style beautifully." (Dec 2023)
