About the winery
The Dr. Loosen Estate has been in the same family for over 200 years. With ungrafted vines averaging 50 years old, some of the best vineyard sites in Germany (four rated grand cru and two premier cru by both the 1868 German classification and the more current Wine Atlas of Germany), Ernst Loosen has the raw materials for stunningly intense, world-class wines. With crop yields almost half of what is permitted by law, only moderate use of organic fertilizers, and old-fashioned cellar practices, Loosen strives to create wines that unmistakably say "Riesling, Mosel, and Dr. Loosen."

Notes from the Winemaker:

This precipitously steep, rocky vineyard consistently yields some of the most elegant and sophisticated white wines in the world. Auslese [OWS-lay-zuh] means “selected from the harvest,” and is a luscious sweet wine made from very ripe clusters that are about 50 percent affected by botrytis. The resulting wine is dense, intensely flavored and rich on the palate, but retains the elegant structure that is characteristic of this great site.

Ratings & Reviews

95 Points - Wine Spectator:

"This light-weight, intensely flavored Riesling shows fine crunch and snap thanks to the acidity, which creates a foil for the peach, lime and vanilla custard flavors that are woven into the creamy texture. Drink now through 2025. 100 cases imported." (Apr 2007)

92 Points - Wine Enthusiast:

"Despite being sweet, with a rounded, full mouthfeel, this isn't cloying at all; a testament to its fine balance. Smoky, leesy, fuel oil and slate scents lead off, followed by pristine flavors of apple, pineapple, lime and honey. Finishes long and clean; this should age 20 years or more." (Jan 2007)
