About the Winery:

The name Witwe Dr. H. Thanisch Erben Müller-Burggraef is inseparably inter-twined with luxurious Riesling wines from Germany‘s most expensive white wine site: “Berncasteler Doctor“

A century-old tale echoes the sublimity of the Doctor wines: Struck with an incurable illness, the Elector Boemund of Trier publicly announced that anybody who delivered a cure to his disease would be rewarded with unimaginable riches. Doctors, pharmacists and healers lined up at the sick bed – to no avail.

The Elector’s fate seemed doomed when a nobleman showed up and handed the patient a cup of golden wine.

Weary of pointless miracle cures Boemund hesitated. Then he drank the wine and finished it joyfully.  A few days later, the fever ceased and Boemund fully recovered.

Upon being asked how he wished to be rewarded the nobleman chuckled and said: “All I ask is that you bestow upon my wine, which only grows on the mountains of Bernkastel, a proper doctor’s degree – as it is the true doctor.” Boemund kindly consented and issued an official doctor’s degree to the growing site.

Ever since, the vineyard bears the honorable name:
“Berncasteler Doctor”

About the Wine:

On the riverbanks of the Mosel, right at the edge of the town Bernkastel the top site of Bernkasteler Lay is situated. The vineyard is West-Southwest oriented, which guarantees as maximum of sunlight during the day. The slate is decomposed and fine, regularly producing superb quality.

Ratings & Reviews

94 Points - Wine Spectator:
"This luscious wine offers flavors of ripe apple, baked pear and sweet baking spices. A tad creamy in texture and well-balanced, this shows lots of complexity throughout. Supple midpalate, with a slightly floral, intense and prolonged finish. Drink now through 2036. 50 cases made, 14 cases imported." (Febraury 2018)

93 Points - Wine Enthusiast:
"Lifted, succulent tones of mango, peach and melon abound in this lip-smacking yet complex auslese. It's boldly concentrated in fruit but exceptionally fine and filigreed on the palate and shaded by nuances of crushed slate, blossom and salt. The finish is piercing and long marked by spine tingling lime acidity." - Anna Lee C. Iijima (April 2018)

92 Points - Wine Advocate:
"The 2016 Riesling Bernkasteler Lay Auslese is deep and flinty on the coolish nose and is sweet, round and fresh on the palate, but it doesn't show the highly finessed character and precision of the Juffer-Sonnenuhr. It's also less complex but a beautifully lithe and quaffable Auslese that was bottled with 8% alcohol and 102 grams of residual sugar (per liter)." Drink 2018-2040. - Stephan Reinhardt (April 2018)
