The Magoutes Vineyard sits high upon the limestone/clay slopes in North-Western Macedonia. At this altitude it sees little maritime influence despite its proximity to the Mediterranean. It is 100% Xinomavro, a native red Greek grape variety of note. It is initially reminiscent of Rioja with tart red fruit and herbal notes. Over time, the fruit and tannins firm up to become more like Nebbiolo. The palate is flush with red fruits, spices, cherry tomato, umami notes of Worcestershire sauce and a savory, mouth-filling meatiness. The finish is firm, fresh, and satiating.
93 Points - James Suckling:
"A zesty and salty red, showing notes of orange rind, sour cherries, olives and seaweed on the nose. Some balsamic, too. It’s medium-bodied and full of flavor, with delicious, sour red fruit and silky tannins. From organically grown grapes. Drink now or hold."
17/20 Points - Jancis Robinson:
Mid cherry red. Succulent sweet red cherry. Smells a little of cherry liqueur in its seductive sweetness, even if it is dry on the palate. Lovely sweet-sour finish and smooth tannic texture. 30-year-old vines. Fermented and aged in big oak. (JH)
