About:
Domaine Michel Gros, a prestigious name in Burgundy winemaking, has a rich history spanning several generations. Michel Gros, the sixth generation of winemakers in his family, began his journey in 1978 by inheriting 2 hectares in the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits appellation. Over the years, he expanded his holdings, acquiring parcels in Vosne Romanée, Chambolle Musigny, and Morey-Saint-Denis. By 1995, upon his father Jean Gros’s retirement, Michel received significant parcels, including ‘Clos de Vougeot’ and ‘Clos de Réas’. Today, Michel Gros oversees 23 hectares of prime Burgundy land, employing sustainable farming practices and meticulous vineyard management to produce wines that are generous, elegant, and consistently high in quality.
Overview:
This Cru was bought by Alphonse Gros in 1860. The engraving at the top of the label dates to the buying of this parcel. The wall of this triangular parcel borders the village in the east. The Clos des Réas is located on the hillock that overhangs the small Réas valley. The geological stratum of the subsoil is a ‘Salmon conglomerate’ on the Oligocene strata, with a large quantity of limestone blocks alternated with marls. This soil profile, together with the slope, ensures excellent drainage. Aged 18 months in French oak barrels, of which 50-70% is new.
Aromatically the wine has notes of brambly berry fruits, spiced with cinnamon and cloves, as well as a hint of thanksgiving herbs. On the palate, the wine has red and black currants as well as tight but balancing tannins.
Ratings & Reviews
94 Points - Vinous Media:
"The 2023 Vosne-Romanée Clos des Réas 1er Cru has a well-defined bouquet with black cherries, blueberry and violet scents, and better-integrated oak than some of the other cuvées. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, but there is some lovely fresh red berry fruit here, with white pepper and allspice lingering on the finish. One of the best wines from the domaine in 2023." - Neil Martin (Oct 2024)
92 Points - Burghound:
"Here too there are top notes of kirsch and exotic tea to the airier and more elegant aromas of the essence of red and black pinot fruit. The lilting, vibrant and succulent medium-bodied flavors possess a generous mouthfeel while displaying solid length on the bitter pit fruitinflected finale that is firm enough will need most of a decade to resolve the supporting tannins." - Allen Meadows (Dec 2024)
