History:

Village Appellation of the Côte de Beaune (dept. of Saône-et-Loire). The Maranges appellation includes 6 Premiers Crus « climats » (named plots). Maranges was granted its own communal AOC in 1988 covering the three villages of Cheilly-lès-Maranges, Dezize-lès-Maranges and Sampigny-lès-Maranges.

Antonin Rodet is the exclusive winegrower and distributor of the Château de Mercey estate. The castel was built in the 16th Century at the Southern limits of the Côte de Beaune. The vineyard estate extends over 41 hectares principally surrounding the Château.

Terrior:
Though the hill-slopes are differently oriented to those of the Côte de Beaune, their nature and origins are geologically the same, making up a varied patchwork of hills and valleys. The vineyards mostly have a south/south-westerly exposure and lie at altitudes of 240-400 metres. Cheilly, in the valley of the Cozanne, has rather light pebbly soils. Sampigny and Dezize share the climats (named plots) which lie to the south of Santenay on brown limestone soils and limey marls.

About this wine:
From 2.20 hectares of truly old vines planted in 1933 and 1937, which gives this cuvée admirable concentration and length. Aging takes place in 3rd and 4th use oak casks. Its color is a deep ruby-red and it has powerful aromas of red berries. As one would expect from a wine from such old vines, it has impressive power, concentration and fine tannins.
