About the Domaine:
Jean-Paul Jamet began his career in the vineyards of Côte Rôtie in 1976 at the age of 16, working with his father, Joseph, who bottled his first wine that year. With the 2016 vintage, Jean-Paul celebrated his 40th year growing and vinifying Côte Rôtie. His experience with his enviable collection of sixteen (soon to be nineteen) lieux-dits spread across the best sites of the appellation has given him deep knowledge of how to unlock the greatest expression of Côte Rôtie from its wide spectrum of terroirs. This savoir-faire makes Jamet the modern day master of the appellation.
The Domaine Jamet lies on a plateau, known as "Le Vallin", with a fabulous view where Mont Blanc and the Alps can be seen in good weather. Entering the storehouse, nature and simplicity seem to be the Jamet family's key words, focused on the artisanal nature of the place. This is where Jean-Paul, his wife Corinne and, more recently their elder son Loïc cultivate vines and wines with a passion.
About this Wine:
For this wine, Jean-Paul Jamet aims for more immediate pleasure from the fruit while preserving its ageing potential.
• Côte Rôtie is 90% whole-cluster, opposite of their IGP Syrah
• All parcels are vinified and aged separately, with no racking
• Aged 22 months in barrel, mostly demi-muid and some barrique, before blending
• Final blend includes sixteen lieux-dits farmed by the domaine: Gerine, Lesardes, Fongeant, Chavaroche, Côte Bodin, Bonnivières, Le Plomb, Le Truchet, Les Moutonnes, La Landonne, Côte Blonde, Côte Rozier, Leyat, Côte Brune, Tartaras, and Rochins
Ratings & Reviews
95 Points - James Suckling:
"A velvety, balanced and textural Cote-Rotie with lots of crunch. Notes of dark cherries, spiced plums, dried herbs, stones and peppercorns. It's medium-bodied with fine tannins and fresh acidity. Lively and bright with tension. Full of vitality and transparency with a long, precise finish. Drink or hold." (Apr 2025)
95 Points - Vinous Media:
"The 2022 Côte-Rôtie is alluring and complex, with ripe black fruit, crushed violet, iodine, graphite and cedar notes alongside stemmy, spicy hints. Medium-bodied yet markedly concentrated, the 2022 shines with flawless elegance and an elongated, expansive finish. Sleek tannins underpin this expressive Côte-Rôtie. This is a fantastic Jamet not to be missed by anyone fortunate enough to latch into a bottle. (Drink between 2029-2040)" - Nicolas Greinacher (Jan 2025)
95+ Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
"Just bottled, the 2022 Côte Rôtie offers a beautifully classic Jamet perfume of red and black fruits, crushed stone, and sappy flowers. It's medium to full-bodied on the palate and has a broad, layered mouthfeel, building tannins, and a great finish. It needs 7-8 years of bottle age and will see its 30th birthday in fine form. Drink 2031-2052.<!--more-->One of the benchmark estates for traditionally made Côte Rôtie, Domaine Jamet is today run by Jean-Paul Jamet alongside his son Loïc, with the support of Jean-Paul's wife Corinne and daughter Fanny. Located high above the appellation near the village of Le Vallin, the estate farms 25 parcels spread across 17 lieux-dits, with the majority of the holdings in the schist-dominated Côte Brune side of the appellation, including Chavaroche, Le Truchet, Les Moutonnes, Rochins, Fongeant, and La Landonne, as well as prime parcels in the Côte Blonde sector such as Lancement. Winemaking here is classic yet not dogmatic, with a strong preference for whole cluster fermentation with adjustments based on the vintage. The wines are aged primarily in older demi-muids, with 15-30% new oak, and are bottled unfined and unfiltered after about two years. While the flagship Côte Rôtie remains a blend of their numerous parcels, a small-production Côte Brune cuvée was introduced in 2015. While it would be easy to assume the Côte Brune bottling is a richer, more powerful wine, it is often a more perfumed, floral, and elegant expression compared to the classic cuvée. Jean-Paul has commented that while the recent vintages of 2018, 2019, and 2020 bordered on excessive in style, he was thrilled with the 2022s, which mark a return to more stylistically classic ripeness levels and balance. (Drink between 2031-2052)" (May 2025)
94 Points - Wine Advocate:
"Vinified with 100% whole bunches, the 2022 Cote Rotie from Jean-Paul & Corinne Jamet reveals a dense, deep and complex bouquet of violets, mulberries, flowers, ripe dark wild berries and licorice, all accented by delicate spicy undertones. Medium to full-bodied, dense and structured, it's tense, with a fleshy core of fruit for a Côte Rôtie and a long, spicy and fruity finish. This vintage stands out with its vibrant, succulent acidity, lending an ethereal quality to the wine and making it less austere than previous vintages." - Yohan Castaing (Feb 2025)
