About the winery:
Domaine Henri Gouges is, in many minds, the top grower of Nuits-Saint-Georges. Members of the Gouges family have been vineyard proprietors in Nuits for generations and proprietors of the current domaine since 1919. Henri Gouges, along with the Marquis d'Angerville from Volnay, was at the forefront of battles against fraud in Burgundy in the 1920s. In the 1930s, Monsieur Gouges was one of the people charged with the job of delineating the crus in Burgundy for the Institut National d'Appellation d'Origine, and he was a member of that regulatory body at its outset. By 1933, Henri was producing, bottling, and selling his wines directly. In 1967 Henri’s two sons, Michel and Marcel, succeeded him and added to the holdings of the estate. Each of them handed leadership over to one of their sons to bring the domaine to the next stage. Pierre and Christian began the modernization of the vineyards and the winery, which they have now turned over to Pierre’s son, Gregory, and his cousin, Antoine. While the house style has evolved, the main focus is the better reflection of the terroir in the fruit through organic viticulture. They believe that healthy vines produce quality fruit and thus more expressive terroir-driven wines.
About this Wine:
Located on the South hillside of Nuits Saint Georges, our two parcels are assembled during vinification for a total surface of 1,8 hectare. This Premier Cru extends in the middle of hillside between 240 and 260 meters of altitude, where we can find a large complexity of rocks, from the flush rock to the screes coming from the top of the hillside. With vines of an average age of 50 years, the Premier Cru Les Pruliers is an intense and robust wine which has a beautiful capacity to ageing.
Varietal: Pinot Noir
Practicing Organic, Biodynamic, Vegan
Ratings & Reviews
94 Points - Wine Spectator:
"A dark, dense red, with aromas of black cherry, blackberry and black currant shaded by graphite and violet. Picks up details of sweet spices as this builds to a lengthy conclusion. Balanced and lively, with a refreshing aftertaste. Best from 2025 through 2042. 300 cases made, 50 cases imported." - BS (May 2023)
92-95 Points - Jasper Morris' Inside Burgundy:
"Almost black in the middle. More a very intense sun dried dark cherry bouquet than raisins though. Pretty heady stuff either way round. Super sumptuous with this exciting red cherry fruit as well as black, and good acidity. It would be easily possible to fall in love with this, even if it is more powerful than I really like. Tasted: November 2021." (Nov 2021)
91-93 Points - Vinous Media:
"The 2020 Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Pruliers 1er Cru did not suffer too much hail according to Antoine Gouges, at most 5%. This is very ripe and slightly gourmand on the nose, light savory noes emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannins, nicely controlled and then just tightening up towards the finish that shows just a bit of VA. Quite dense of a Pruliers, give this some time in the cellar." - Neal Martin (Dec 2021)
