About the Domaine:
Jean-Pierre de Smet defined the winemaking style at Domaine de L’Arlot with his philosophy that “the more one knows, the less one interferes.” In 2002, he brought biodynamic farming to the domaine and even cured the wood that would eventually be made into the estate’s barrels. Jean-Pierre retired in 2007 turning over the estate to Olivier Leriche, who followed the same philosophy and believed that every decision has to “respect the soil, respect the plants, and ensure that both are in harmony with the environment.”
About this Wine:
'Clos des Forêts' is a single estate vineyard, known as 'monopole' in French, is home to vines of approximately 45 years old. This unique terroir covers 7.2 hectares, and is composed of multi-layered soils with clay, limestone and gravel.
The grapes are hand picked, twice sorted (once on the vine, then at the crush pad after being picked). All transfers are made via gravity flow. By avoiding the use of pumps, the integrity of the grapes are better preserved. Domaine de l'Arlot takes a very hands off approach to winemaking.
This wine is aged in roughly 45% New French Oak for 16 to 18 months.
Ratings & Reviews
93-95 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The most structured and muscular of Domaine de l'Arlot's premiers crus, the 2019 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos des Forêts St Georges wafts from the glass with aromas of cassis, plums, dark berries, raw cocoa and sweet soil tones. Medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with lively acids, powdery tannins and a youthfully chalky finish, this is an elegantly muscular wine built to age." - William Kelley (1/2021)
93-95 Points - Vinous Media:
"The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Forêts Saint Georges 1er Cru comprises 30% whole bunch and 35% new oak. It has the best bouquet from the domaine this year, delivering gorgeous red fruits laced with violet that burst from the glass, quite Vosne-like in style. The palate is succulent but structured on the entry, presenting a perfect line of acidity, while beautifully integrated oak lends a seamless texture. Very persistent and satiny on the finish. An outstanding wine for the vintage." - Neal Martin (12/2020)
91-94 Points - Allen Meadows' Burghound:
"As is typically the case, this displays a completely different aromatic profile with its array of ripe dark berries, cassis, warm earth and a whiff of the sauvage. The dense, powerful and muscular big-bodied flavors possess excellent size, weight and punch while remaining balanced on the wonderfully persistent finish. While this can't match the Clos de l'Arlot or the Suchots for refinement, the supporting tannins are not particularly rustic; indeed it would be fair to say that this is more refined than usual."
