About the winery:
The Lançon family descend directly from the 12th Century Barberini family of Rome.

The best known of the family, Maffeo Barberini, was a papal nuncio, or diplomatic representative, in Paris from 1604 to 1606, and was made Pope in Rome under the name Pope Urban VIII.

Two of his nephews became cardinals and a part of the family then settled down in Avignon. In the 1980s, brothers Michel and Jean Lançon took the future of Domaine de la Solitude in their hands, focusing attention on the vineyards.

Over the past several years, Michel’s son Florent Lançon has taken over the day-to-day operations of Domaine de la Solitude, continuing to make improvements while preserving the traditions of his father and uncle.

This cuvée is a tribute to the founding fathers of the Estate. It is made with a parcellary selection of old vines of Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah. The Grenache grapes come from old vines planted on the high quaternary alluvium terraces surrounding the Estate. These terraces are the cradle of the famous terroirs of quartzite pebbles and clay, which give the Barberini cuvee great tannic and aromatic force. This wine is aged for 18 months, spending most of this time in barrels.

About this wine:

Blend  The grenaches come from old vines planted on the high Quaternary alluvial terraces surrounding the estate. These famous soils of pebbles of quartzites and clays, they give the Cuvée Barberini a great tannic and aromatic power.

• 50 % Grenache noir • 35 % Syrah • 15 % Mourvèdre

Winemaking and aging Harvesting is done by hand in 25 kg crates. After a double selection of the best bunches in the vineyard then on a sorting table, the grapes are crushed and partially destemmed. They are vinified by gravity in concrete vats. Long macerations with gentle extractions provide these tannins both powerful and velvetines. This vintage is aged for 60% in barrels and 20% in foudres for 15 months. The wine is bottled without filtration or fining.

The Vintage 2022 5000 bottles and 200 magnums were produced.

Ratings & Reviews

95 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:

The Barberini cuvée is always a slightly more modern styled wine, and the 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape Barberini is no exception, yet it still possesses an incredibly Provençal, complex, elegant style that has so much to love. Red and black fruits, sappy spring flowers, spice, and garrigue notes all shine on the nose, and despite being brought up in some new barrels, its oak is flawlessly integrated. With medium to full-bodied richness, a pure, layered mouthfeel, polished tannins, and a great finish, drink this brilliant wine over the coming 10-15 years. The blend of the 2022 is 50% Grenache, 35% Syrah, and 15% Mourvèdre raised in 60% new barrels.

93 Points - Wine Spectator:
A burly, broad-shouldered red, with a lot of stuffing. Modern in style, offering a generous lacquer of oak atop black plum and bitter cherry, all held together by muscular, black tea tannins. Still tightly wound, this will loosen up and integrate with a few years' time. Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah. Best from 2026 through 2038. 600 cases made, 100 cases imported.
