About the Winery:
One of the greatest producers in the Mâconnais, Domaine Cordier is in the village of Fuissé, managing a mosaic of over 100 parcels, spread over 32 hectares. Cordier and his team, work the vineyards biodynamically, without tractors, and often plowed by horse. The wines benefit from progressive techniques on pruning and canopy management, and biodynamic remedies made with natural rainwater. Small vinifications are made by parcel, in neutral barrels with native yeast, and moved by gravity. With Premier Cru classification completed in 2020, over 30% of Cordier’s carefully selected old-vine parcels are within these 22 classified vineyards. Christophe makes 30 different terroir focused Chardonnays with an average production of 800 cases. Top cuvees are compared to the finest Grand Cru bottlings of Burgundy. Demeter certification expected for the 2024 vintage.
Christophe and his team recognize that great wine starts with outstanding fruit. They go beyond organic and biodynamic practices with extensive manual effort, without tractors, for soil quality.
About the Wine:
Christophe is helping to raise the prestige of the Mâconnais to international acclaim for fine wine. With less than 600 cases produced, these tiny parcels of old-vines have been carefully selected over the decades to showcase the best of the Viré-Clessé terroir. Fermented in open, neutral oak vats and moved by gravity to 350-500 liter neutral barrels for further aging.
Tasting Notes:
With a meticulous grape selection from organically farmed vineyards the old vines of Viré-Clessé produce a bone-dry wine with beautiful fruits and flowers, like apple blossom, honeysuckle and acacia. The palate is balanced with a fine line of acidity joined by quince and mango skin flavors lining the rich but laser focused finish.
Ratings & Reviews:
89-90 Points - Allen Meadows' Burghound (2021):
"As the wines from Viré-Clessé often are, the nose is overtly exotic with its aromas of dried peach, apricot and passion fruit. The dense, opulent and palate coating medium-bodied flavors are borderline painfully intense while delivering fine length on the bone-dry and super citrusy finish. I suspect that this will unwind and become more civilized with a few years of bottle aging." (Oct 2021)
