About the Domaine:
Many domaines in Burgundy can trace their roots back over 100 years, but only a handful can claim more than 200 years of history, let alone 550 years. Highly regarded as the greatest estate in Chambolle Musigny, Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé is now headed by its 20th generation – Claire de Causans and Marie de Ladoucette, the granddaughters of the late Comte Georges de Vogüé. The estate's longstanding employees have also contributed to the brand's outstanding quality vintage after vintage with François Millet as Winemaker since 1986, Jean-Luc Pépin as Sales Manager since 1988 and Eric Bourgogne as Vineyard Manager since 1996.
About this Wine:
The estate’s vines (nearly seven acres) are all located on the Chambolle side of Bonnes-Mares. The terroir here has more red clay (where Morey has more marl and limestone) for a more velvety-textured, rounder wine, with characteristic aromas of violets and wildflowers.
Ratings & Reviews
97 - 98 Points - James Suckling:
"Welcome to the wide, red velvet sofa! Very subtle black-fruit aromas, including a touch of mulberry. Expansive and concentrated, but very precise, thanks to the extremely fine tannins, the earthiness ever more prominent at the generous and beautifully proportioned finish." - James Suckling (Feb 2023)
97 Points - Jasper Morris' Inside Burgundy:
"In bottle. Made as three cuvees, then assembled. A rich mid purple with a deliciously heady bouquet, the sumptuous side of dark raspberry, perfumed yet precise, purple fruit with some redder layers beneath, a little white pepper spice, multiple layers of fruit, very engaging with just a very slight youthful bitterness. Irreproachable." (Jan 2023)
96 Points - Decanter Magazine:
"We tasted an assortment of barrels from the 2022 vintage: one from the southern end of Bonnes-Mares, one from the middle, and one from the north. The portion from the south showed results that are supple and elegant with a lovely fruit and impressive length. The center shows a lovely richness and density, and the sample coming from the northern end of the vineyard showed more reduction, but there was a lovely finesse and an elegant raspberry note. The blend should produce one of the wines of the vintage in this appellation. (Drink between 2028-2070)" - Charles Curtis (Jan 2023)
95 Points - Wine Advocate:
"Another cuvée that was also in bottle when I visited, the 2022 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru unfurls in the glass with aromas of cherries and raspberries mingled with exotic notes and sweet forest floor. Medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, it's concentrated and textural, with nicely integrated tannins, lively acids and a long, saline, rose-inflected finish. Its more sensual style is a welcome evolution." - William Kelley (Jan 2024)
94 Points - Allen Meadows' Burghound:
"An even spicier and more floral-suffused nose is comprised mostly by blue pinot fruit and discreet earth wisps. The succulent, refined and vibrant medium-bodied flavors aren't especially concentrated though they do possess impressive power on the beautifully long and equally well-balanced finale. This is a wine that is certainly built to repay extended keeping but it's not so compact that it couldn't be reasonably approached after only 5 to 7 years." (Jan 2024)
90 Points - Vinous Media:
"The 2022 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru had been bottled in October 2023, just before my visit at the Domaine. It has a compact nose: mainly black cherries and crushed strawberry fruit, well-defined if maybe missing the amplitude of other Bonnes-Mares that I have tasted. The medium-bodied palate has a slightly creamy-textured opening, sweet blackberry and raspberry and touches of dark chocolate and mocha. There’s fine depth on the finish with light grip. Some wood tannins mark the finish and slightly occlude the fruit expression here." - Neal Martin (Jan 2024)
