The Hospices de Beaune is a top-level wine estate covering 60 hectares, of which 85% are in premiers crus and grands crus areas. The wines of the Hospices de Beaune (referred to as cuvées) often bear the name of the family who donated the plots of vines whose grapes go into the composition of the wine. This tradition dates back to 1457, when Jean Guillotte le Verrier made the first donation of vines to the Hôtel-Dieu built by Nicolas Rolin in Beaune in 1443. This custom continued through the centuries and endures today. Making a donation of vines to the Hospices is a way for the patients or their family to thank the institution, ensure its longevity and, also, to go down in history themselves!
The Abbey of Cîteaux was a pioneer cultivating Burgundy’s vineyards. Records show a donation in 1260 of a Pommard vineyard named “En Espeneaul” (today written “Epenots”). In homage to Cîteaux’s historic role, this Cuvée is named after the last cellarer of the Abbey, Dom Goblet, who worked until the Revolution. The Pinot Noir vines are over 50 years old, producing a subtly perfumed, harmonious wine.
An obvious indicator of their quality is the fact that 85% of the Domaine des Hospices vines are classified as premiers crus and grands crus. The remaining 15% are classified as ’appellation village’. For many years now, the Domaine’s vineyards have been cultivated taking a sustainable, environmentally-friendly approach (no chemical inputs), and even according to organic principles when the conditions over the year allow it.
Tasting Notes:
Beautiful red intense color with darker hints. Aromatic nose of black fruits and hint of blond tobacco. Backbone with nice fresh and elegant expression. This single vineyard wine shows the racy character of Les Epenots terroir.
Food pairing; Foie gras ravioles, stuffed capon or farm chicken, medium strong cheese.
Ratings & Reviews
Jasper Morris' Inside Burgundy - reviewed but no score given, 10 barrels produced:"From one of Pommard’s noblest terroirs, Dom Goblet 2020 is a very striking wine. On the nose the fruit is discreet without any sign of excess ripeness. On the palate, the flavours expand to fill the mouth with an intensity of fruit picked at optimum ripeness, as red notes shade into black fruit with a graceful harmony that is the essence of Les Epenots. The tannins and acidity maintain this sense of balance. A great wine with excellent ageing potential." (Nov 2020)
