About the Winery:
Jerome Castagnier chose a profession as a trumpeter in the Republican Guard rather than take the helm of the family domaine. In 2004, he left Paris and the army to return home to Morey-St-Denis. There he experienced the 2005 harvest alongside his father and grandfather. He is the fifth generation to run the domaine. Jules Séguin was the founder and through passage from the female line and sons-in-law, the family name has changed. Since 2004 the wines have been bottled as Domaine Castagnier.
About the Wine:
The vineyard sits on clay-limestone soils from Middle Jurassic. This is a unique appellation in Burgundy resulting from a blend of two grape varieties. Comes from a .79 acre parcel planted in 1975 in Morey-St-Denis near the winery. Integrated pest management and biodynamic practices employed in the vineyard, but no certification.
Ratings & Reviews
Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy:
"Dark purple. There is a bright juicy exuberant pinot nose, dark fruit but still lifted, more energy than the Coteaux Bourguignons. More structure with some tannins, and still good acidity. The fruit in 2020 is only a mite richer than typical Castagnier. Tasted Dec 2021."
Burgundy Report:
In Gevrey also with some 20% villages wine from Morey included…
More incisive, finely structured nose – earthy, fine and again perfumed. Mouth-filling, layered, finely grained no dryness, really complex. I would say a great Villages!
