About the Winery:
In the world of wine, there are many good winegrowers. However, there are only a very select few who are truly great, and Auguste Clape will go down in history as one of the greats. A proud and uncompromising pioneer of fine winemaking in the Northern Rhône, his Syrahs from the cru of Cornas have earned their place among the most celebrated wines of France.
Domaine Clape is legendary in the Northern Rhône. This world-class estate was the first in Cornas to estate-bottle Syrah and sell it under their own name.

Domaine Clape’s eight hectares of terraced vineyards lay scattered across the Rhone Valley and are rooted into the region’s signature granitic soils. Their Syrah-based wines are produced in a traditional and classic style, known for their full body, spicy fruit flavors, and powerful structure. Their Cornas shows flavors of red and black fruits, game, leather, purple flowers, and olives. A regional classic!

About this Wine:
Clapes masterpiece is his classic Cornas, precisely blended from five to six cuvées of the oldest vines in the best sites. The backbone comes from Reynard, La Côte and Sabarotte. The old vines here are la Petite Syrah—the old clone considered by many to be the true Syrahwhich creates a stunningly deep and complex wine that will develop for decades.

Ratings & Reviews

96-98 Points - Vinous Media:
“A highly complex bouquet evokes ripe black/blue fruits, candied flowers, olive paste, smoked meat, incense and potpourri, and mineral and earth notes appear as the wine opens up. Stains the palate with intense, spice- and mineral-accents bitter cherry, dark chocolate and violet pastille flavors that show wonderful definition and back-end cut. Velvety, slow-building tannins add shape to an extremely long, subtly chewy finish hat delivers real power and mineral drive.” – Josh Raynolds (May 2020)

96-98 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
"More blue fruits, candied violets, iron, smoked meats, and truffly notes emerge from the 2019 Cornas. A bigger, richer wine, offering full-bodied richness, building, beautiful tannins, and just about flawless balance, it almost reminds me of the 2010, which is just now starting to drink brilliantly." (2/16/2022)

96 Points - James Suckling:
"I love the enveloping nose of smoke, cocoa powder and damson plum that pulls you deep into this very concentrated Cornas with its rich, velvety tannins and stony minerality that run very smoothly through the long, complete finish. Drink or hold." (Mar 2022)

95-97 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"Tremendously dense and powerful, the 2019 Cornas is a dazzling, dark-fruited beast that's loaded with mint, cassis and licorice notes. Full-bodied and almost overflowing with intensity, it somehow manages to pull all that impressive richness and extract into a silky, fine-grained finish of amazing length and elegance. Unless you are hell-bent on trying it on release, give it some time in the cellar—it should be peaking around 2035 or so." – Joe Czerwinski (Jan 2022)
