About the Winery:
After Jack and Jamie Davies revived the historic  Schramsberg property in Napa Valley, their son, Hugh Davies, initiated a red wine program using the family’s estate vineyards on Diamond Mountain. Starting in the 1990s, Hugh undertook the replanting of the home property to red Bordeaux varietals leading to the  J. Davies Cabernet program; he later partnered with  North Coast growers to launch Davies Vineyards  Pinot Noirs.

About this Wine:
The Davies family of Schramsberg and Davies Vineyards is proud to release the fourteenth vintage of its Ferrington Vineyards Pinot Noir. Their Pinot Noir journey began in 1967, when Jack and Jamie Davies crafted the first vintage of Schramsberg’s Blanc de Noirs. Over the past 57 years, the family has cultivated deep relationships with top North Coast Pinot Noir growers. Building on this legacy, second-generation Vintner Hugh Davies and winemakers Sean Thompson, Jessica Koga, and J.P. Pierce present this vineyard-designate wine from the 2022 vintage.

About the Vineyards:
Ferrington Vineyards lies in the northeastern foothills of Mendocino’s Anderson Valley, about 100 miles north of San Francisco and 17 miles from the Pacific Ocean. Situated at 360–440 feet in elevation, the site features deep Boontling and Pinole loam soils, sustainable farming, and deficit irrigation to yield roughly 2.5 tons per acre of bright, balanced fruit. Cool, foggy nights and warm, steady days create a long, even growing season, producing fruit with depth, complexity, and vibrant acidity.

About the Vintage:
The 2022 season was the third year in a row of drought conditions across the north coast. Dryer conditions led to balanced vines with smaller canopies and lighter crop levels. Harvest began around mid-September after record breaking heat waves around Labor Day Weekend. The harvested fruit developed into wines of delicious concentration and acidity.

Winemaking:
After careful fruit selection the grapes are gently pressed and aged for 15 months in approximately 22% new French oak barrels prior to bottling.

Tasting Notes:
This fuller-bodied Pinot Noir opens with red and black cherry, boysenberry, chocolate soil, vanilla, nutmeg and anise. Textural, corduroy-like tannins gently coat the palate, balanced by acidity and roundness.

Ratings and Reviews

95 Points - Wine Enthusiast:
"This wine is vibrant, rich, with aromas of ripe plum, Bing cherry, cardamom spice, fresh flowers, and notes of fresh bay laurel on the nose. The flavors on the palate are youthful Black plum, Black currant coulis, black tea, Pink grapefruit peel, gliding into bittersweet chocolate, earth, and a long supple finish. Hold or Decant drinking window 2024-2032." (Dec 2024)

93 Points - James Suckling:
"A gorgeous, sun-drenched, full-bodied wine that's easy on the palate and saturated with warm fruit flavors. Strawberry, red cherry, raspberry jam and spearmint flavors are cradled in rather soft tannins and subtle acidity. Drink now." (Nov 2024)

92 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
"The fourteenth vintage of Ferrington from the folks behind both the Davies and Schramsberg wineries, the 2022 Pinot Noir Ferrington Vineyards is a broad-shouldered red with brooding dark fruit and jolts of baking spice. It’s hearty and concentrated on the palate, with supple tannins and impressive length. It has an aging potential of 7-10 years.<!--more-->The Davies here is Hugh Davies, son of Jack and Jamie Davies of Napa Valley’s Schramsberg Vineyards sparkling house. Hugh took on head winemaking duties in 2000, soon after launching wines beyond sparkling, such as the J. Davies Diamond Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon. A separate winery for Davies Vineyards wines was built in St. Helena from 2014-2017. Many of the Pinot Noirs are sourced from Anderson Valley vineyards by the winemaking team of Sean Thompson, Jessica Koga, and J.P. Pierce. (Drink between 2025-2035)." - Virginie Boone (Feb 2025)

90 Points - Wine Spectator:
"Shows juicy energy as an expressive mix of mulberry, cherry and raspberry fruit swirls around, liberally flecked with rose hip, hibiscus and singed apple wood. Drink now through 2030. 475 cases made." - James Molesworth (Apr 2025)
