Notes from the Winemaker:

From 2 vineyards, one of which goes back to 1950! The Mosconi cru is exactly parallel to SorI Ginestra, albeit higher in altitude (averaging 400 meters, i.e. 1,312 feet) and less than a mile away. Surface under vine is 1.3 hectares (3.2 acres). Exposure is southeasterly and soil composition is 26% sand, 50% silt + 24% clay, rich in manganese, conducive to very high levels of polyphenols. Gradient is 30%. Barrique-aged 2 years, bottle-aged 1 year. In spite of Mosconi and SorI Ginestra's vicinity and identical methods in the winery and cellars, the Barolo Mosconi has characteristics of its very own, almost purely because of the distinct clones and age of vines.

VINIFICATION AND AGING
Maceration on the skins in rotary fermenters for 6-7 days; aged 24 months in new barriques of French oak, in bottle 12 months previous to release.

TASTING NOTES

Ratings & Reviews

96 Points – Jeb Dunnuck:
“Equally compelling, the 2020 Barolo Mosconi Vigna Ped boasts a ruby hue and reveals layered notes of blood orange, apricot, roses, tea leaf, and wild raspberries. Savory on the palate, it has a noble structure, with outstanding definition and persistence. I‘m impressed with the overall balance and finesse this wine has to offer. Drink 2025-2045.” (May 2024)

96 Points – Vinous Media:
“The 2020 Barolo Mosconi Vigna Ped is the most potent and tannic of these wines, but it retains the mid-weight signature of the year and the more nuanced style that is the norm these days at Conterno-Fantino. Dark, ample and broad on the palate, the 2020 offers up a beguiling mix of dark fruit, leather, tobacco, incense, licorice and dried herbs. The 2020 is a complex, dynamic wine that constantly changes in the glass. It should provide exceptional drinking for the next 15-20 years. This is classic Mosconi.” - Antonio Galloni (Jan 2024)

95 Points – James Suckling:
“This exceptional wine is deep and dusky, packed with mineral, floral and savory notes that will blossom with time. It shows iron, iodine and rose petals in the nose, then lithe tannins wrap up cranberries, bitter orange, and sour cherry. Best from 2028.” (Jan 2024)

94 Points – Wine Advocate:
“The Conterno Fantino 2020 Barolo Mosconi Vigna Ped has aromas of brandied cherry, Luxardo cherry liqueur, oak toast, licorice root and dark rye. This Barolo is relatively tight in terms of its texture, with good intensity, chalky tannins and sufficient fruit to stand up to the tannins. Fruit comes from a one-hectare site with a combination of sand, silt and clay. Production is 6,000 bottles.” - Monica Larner (Apr 2024)
