About the winery:

Elvio Cogno was founded in 1990 by Elvio himself, a 4th generation winemaker, after working for years with the venerable Barolo producer Marcarini at La Morra. He bought a splendid, historic 18th-century farmhouse on the top of Bricco Ravera, a hill near Novello in the Langhe area. (Novello is one of the 11 communes in which Barolo is produced.) Here is what Robert Parker's Wine Advocate had to say about this site: "Of the many great contributions made by the winemaking team at Elvio Cogno, perhaps the greatest is the importance they brought to the Ravera cru of Novello. Little-known before their efforts, this vineyard has risen in high regard in recent years and continues to show impressive potential." Elvio passed away in 2016, but not before passing the winery along to his daughter, Nadia, and her husband, Valter Fissore, who had worked beside Elvio for 25 years.

Notes from the Winemaker:

Deep ruby red in color with a slight orange edge. Harmonious, well-balanced aroma, a pleasant blend of floral, fruity and soft spicy scents, with a finish of rose, violet and vanilla. Fresh, lively bouquet, with harmonious tannins and alcohol and balanced acidity. Soft, elegant and full-bodied with a very long aftertaste. Redolent of freshly macerated red berries, raspberry and redcurrant. Goes well with robust roasts and hard, well-aged cheeses.
Serving temperature: 17°C.

Nebbiolo has always been one of the most beautiful grapes of the Langhe, able of expressing new nuances and emotions to those who cultivate and vinify it with respect. It is a meaningful gift and great ambassador of its land of origins. Montegrilli is born in the vineyards with the objective of becoming a genuine and focused wine, able to show the true personality of the Nebbiolo grape. With this in mind, we produce a wine without any aging in wood in order to differentiate clearly it from Barolo, creating a product with great immediacy and drinkability.

Ratings & Reviews

90 Points - Vinous Media

"The 2013 Langhe Nebbiolo Montegrilli shows just how beautiful Nebbiolo can be here on the property. Lavender, wild flowers, mint, cherry and plums are all wonderfully vibrant on the palate. Aging in steel keeps the flavors bright and fresh throughout." - Antonio Galloni (Nov 2014)

89 Points - Wine Enthusiast:
"Vibrant and savory, this fresh Nebbiolo doles out blue flower, crushed red cherry and black raspberry flavors. Accents of white pepper add depth while supple tannins and bright acidity create balance. It finishes on a succulent note." - KK (12/31/2014)
