About the Winery:
Clos Figueras is a boutique Priorat estate founded in 1997 by Christopher Cannan, located just north of Gratallops on classic llicorella (schist) soils that define the region’s powerful, mineral-driven wines. The 18-hectare property includes old-vine Carignan and Grenache alongside newer plantings of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc, and Viognier, with vineyard care and winemaking overseen by René Barbier’s renowned team.

Much of the property’s original Carignan and Grenache parcels are decades old, offering naturally low yields and concentrated fruit character, while newer plantings from the late 1990s and early 2000s broaden the estate’s varietal complexity.

The organic grapes are harvested by hand to maintain fruit integrity. In the cellar, the team employs techniques influenced by both Priorat tradition and Rhône Valley sensibilities, including selective use of French oak and, in some cases, barrel fermentation that adds depth and texture to the wines. Their approach prioritizes purity of site expression: low yields, careful grape sorting, and restrained élevage that allows the region’s mineral-rich terroir to shine through. This philosophy, coupled with thoughtful replanting and ongoing vineyard stewardship, underscores Clos Figueras’ commitment to producing powerful yet balanced wines that reflect the uniqueness of Priorat.

About this Wine:
Clos Figueras Font de la Figuera Tinto is made from Garnacha, Carignan, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon, all hand-harvested in 15kg boxes before spending the night in a cool room and undergoing a meticulous second sorting at the winery. Fermentation takes place in 2,500-liter stainless steel tanks with temperature control and daily pigeage, with a portion of the Syrah fermented whole-cluster to enhance aromatic complexity. After two to three weeks of maceration and a gentle vertical pressing, the wine is aged for 12 months in 500-liter French oak barrels. Sourced from the steep, stony soils of Priorat, the wine reflects the region’s hallmark minerality and depth. It shows a ripe cherry color with a bright violet rim, offering expressive aromas of wild red fruits complemented by fine toasted oak. The palate is fresh, gourmand, and elegant, carrying the classic mineral signature of the area and finishing long, lifted, and refined with persistent freshness.

Ratings & Reviews

94 Points - Guia Penin:
Style: wild, dark forest. Color: Cherry. Aroma: expressive, spicy, mineral, black fruit, scrubland, black liquorice. Flavour: full-bodied, long, great length.

17+ Points - Jancis Robinson:

Full bottle 1,205 g. Old-vine Grenache (65%) and Carignan (25%), with a bit of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon. Hand-picked. At the winery overnight in a cool room followed by a second selection on the sorting table. Fermentation in stainless-steel tanks of 2,500 litres. Temperature-controlled daily pigeage. Some of the Syrah is not destemmed. Maceration of two to three weeks. Vertical press with a soft pressing. Aged for 12 months in French oak barrels of 500 litres. Again (like Clos Figueras 2022), pretty mute on the nose. The tannins are much bigger, more racehorse muscular, broader, than Clos Figueras 2022. Wonderful tamarind tang. Dried plums and cherries, woodsy bosky notes, a touch of violet and pot pourri and black tea leaves. Very fragrant white-pepper finish.

92 Points - Wine Advocate:
"The red 2022 Font de la Figuera was produced with a blend of Garnacha, Cariñena, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah that fermented in 2,500-liter tanks and matured in 500-liter oak barrels for one year. It feels more harmonious and balanced than last year, despite being ripe and coming in at 15% alcohol. It has a touch of rusticity with dusty tannins when tasted next to the finer 2021. 8,900 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2024, a second lot that feels different from the first one." – Luis Gutierrez (May 2025)
