About the Winery:
Ciacci Piccolomini is one of the most sought-after producers in all of Italy. This ancient estate has 35 hectares of superior holdings in the prized Castelnuovo dell'Abate zone, including the 'Pianrosso' vineyard (meaning 'red field,' a reference to the iron rich soils). Made by the brother-and-sister team Paolo and Lucia Bianchini, this ancient estate was left to the Bianchini family in 1985 by Countess Elda Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona, who had no heirs; Giuseppe (Paolo and Lucia's father) had been the estate manager.
About this Wine:
Rossofonte comes from a careful selection of hand-picked grapes of Sangiovese Grosso with low yields from estate owned vineyards.
- 100% declassified Brunello ~ 100% Sangiovese Grosso
- 240-360 meters above sea level, all planted to marly soils
- Fermentation in a combination of stainless steel and cement vats
- Aging in 7.5-20hl slavonian oak for 12 months
Ratings & Reviews
92 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
"The 2023 Rosso Di Montalcino Rossofonte pours a medium red hue and brings more depth and intensity than the standard bottling. The nose shows layers of smoky incense, ripe red and black berries, crushed flowers, and mossy earth. Medium to full-bodied, it has plush tannins and a long, mouthwatering finish, with enough acidity to keep it moving even with a touch of warmth. It should drink best over the next several years. Drink 2026-2034." – Audrey Frick (Feb 2026)
92 Points - James Suckling:
"A bright, ripe wine full of plums and raspberries, with black cherries, smashed flowers and blood oranges. Very juicy and energetic on the medium-bodied palate, showing good weight, refreshing acidity and polished, velvety tannins. Drink or hold." (Nov 2025)
