About the Winery:
Ségla is the second wine of the prestigious Château Rauzan Ségla. The history of Château Rauzan-Ségla dates back to 1661 when Pierre de Rauzan acquired the estate. Rauzan-Ségla grew in reputation in a remarkable way and produced some of the most highly rated wines in Bordeaux. They delighted many well-known dignitaries, most notably Thomas Jefferson who came across this wine during his visit to Bordeaux in 1787, subsequently placing an order for several cases in 1790. Some decades later, the historic 1855 Bordeaux Classification ranked Château Rauzan-Ségla as a 2nd Growth. Today, the property is owned by the Wertheimer family of the fashion house Chanel and managed by Nicolas Audebert.

About this Wine:

About half of the 52 hectares of vineyard are around the château, but there are additional parcels near Margaux and Brane-Cantenac. The plantings are comprised of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc with an average vine age of 30 years and a yield of 32 hl/ha. Soils at Rauzan-Ségla are composed of deep, fine gravel which makes for natural irrigation

After hand harvesting and a double sorting, the fruit is gently crushed and then delivered to stainless tanks by gravity-flow where the fermentation begins. Alcoholic fermentation in lasted eight days with pump overs two or three times a day. Malolactic fermentation mostly occurred in vat, but a few wines were done in barrel. The wine was aged in 20% new French oak barrels.

Tasting Notes:
Deep ruby in appearance, Segla delivers aromas of blueberry and vanilla on the nose. On the palate it is medium bodied with silky tannins.

Ratings & Reviews

92-93 Points - James Suckling:
"A solid red with a dense palate of ripe fruit, chewy tannins and a savory finish. This shows structure and reserve. Excellent second wine from Rauzan." (Apr 2016)

92 Points - Vinous Media:
"The 2015 Segla reveals baked cherries, hoisin and light cedar aromas on the nose, which is tightly wound at first but gains intensity with aeration. The oak is neatly integrated. The very well-balanced, medium-bodied palate features firm tannin, commendable purity, smooth texture and just a touch of white pepper and graphite toward the persistent finish. This is a classy Margaux to add to many others." - Neal Martin (Jul 2019)

91 Points - The Wine Independent:
"Medium to deep garnet colored, the 2015 Segla bursts with notes of black cherries, redcurrant jelly, and juicy blackberries, plus hints of dried mint and dark chocolate. The medium to full-bodied palate is coated with bright black fruits plus grainy tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing with lovely purity." - LPB (Nov 2022)

90-92 Points - Wine Advocate:
"The 2015 Segla is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot, and a "seasoning" of 1% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc, representing just over half the total crop, matured in 25% new wood. It has a fragrant, very precise bouquet with mineral-rich, very pure blackberry, blueberry and cold flint-like aromas. There is wonderful tension here for a deuxième vin. The palate is medium-bodied with a juicy opening, just a tingle of spice on the tip of the tongue. There is very fine tension here, moderate weight but great persistence and sense of energy on the finish. On a budget? Thinking of a second wine? Look no further." - Neal Martin (Apr 2016)
