About the Winery:
Château Angélus is known for its complex, structured and particularly elegant wines, whose refinement is only matched by the family passion that gave them birth. The estate has been owned by the Boüard de Laforest family since the Domaine de Mazerat was bequeathed to Comte Maurice de Boüard de Laforest in 1910. It was expanded by the acquisition of Clos de L'Angélus in 1922 by Elisabeth Bouchet his wife and a plot from Château Beau-Séjour Bécot in 1969. The name refers to the three Angelus bells audible from the vineyards, coming from the chapel at Mazerat, the church in Saint-Martin de Mazerat and Saint-Émilion.

Château Angélus was designated a Grand Cru Classé when the Saint-Émilion classification was created in 1955, due to its already outstanding reputation. In 2012, it reached the pinnacle, achieving the title of Premier Grand Cru Classé "A," a distinction it held until the 2021 vintage. In early 2022, the Domaine opted to withdraw from the classification, the next edition of which was scheduled to be officially announced in September of that year. Consequently, from the 2022 vintage onward, the Château Angélus label will only bear the Grand Cru de Saint-Émilion designation.

About the Wine:
Château Angélus is planted in a 27-hectare vineyard, on slopes with clay soils, as well as on pied-de-côte with clay-limestone soils. The grape varieties are 50% Merlot, 47% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines are aged for 18 to 22 months in French oak barrels. Le Carillon d'Angelus, the winery's second wine, was first introduced in 1987. The winery's newest offering, Tempo d'Angelus, was first introduced in 2019.

Tempo d’Angelus has been created as a more streamlined version of its illustrious older siblings, Château Angelus and Carillon d’Angelus, with which it shares their characteristic depth and complexity, while offering at the same time a more approachable aspect. Produced from the great Angelus terroirs and made with the expertise of the estate’s teams, Tempo d’Angelus will offer demanding wine lovers an attractive, well-structured, precise and hedonistic wine that doesn’t require 15 or 20 years of cellaring to be enjoyed at its peak, as is often the case for the Grand Cru wines.

This new offering is produced from vines located at Saint-Magne-de-Castillon, Castillon-La-Bataille and Sainte-Colombe, a few kilometres from Saint-Émilion, on magnificent clay-limestone slopes. These plots were acquired by Angelus in 2017 with the precise purpose of creating a Bordeaux appellation wine (while increasing the Angelus range) and thereby contributing internationally to the prestige of Bordeaux.

Tempo d’Angelus is vinified in a cellar which is specifically designed for this cuvée, within Chai Carillon at Saint Magne de Castillon, where it benefits from state-of-the-art technology and all the savoir-faire of the Angelus team.

Ratings & Reviews

91 Points - James Suckling (2023):
"Racy fruit with hawthorn, rose hips, red berries and cherries. Linear, with a nice structure, but nothing heavy from the fruit flesh in the middle. Fine-grained, with medium body and a chewy but juicy finish. Needs two more years to allow the fruit tannins to round off. More bones than flesh this year. Drink after 2026.” (Feb 2025)
