Notes From The Winemaker:

Rare Rosé Millésime 2014 sweeps you up in a whirlwind of aromas, the kindred spirit of Rare Rosé Millésime 2007. The wine’s sensory eccentricity enhances the expressive palette of Rare Champagne. A talkative wine whose unbridled energy reveals itself immediately, this rosé vintage later reveals a tender, fragrant intensity, both floral and spiced, evoking a sophisticated feminine fragrance.

Vintage

After an especially mild and humid autumn and winter, drier weather followed in March and April. Then, after a rainy period, June became hot and sunny. July and August were extremely cold and rainy. A sunny and very dry climate finally settled in September, heralding a bountiful harvest.

Tasting Notes:

On the eye: The wine’s incredibly dense, coppery rose gold color anticipates the richness and depth of its bouquet. It is reminiscent of the intensity of Rare Rosé Millésime 2007. The bubbles are very subtle.

On the nose: Rare Rosé Millésime 2014 displays its extra-ordinary personality from the first nose. It opens with strong aromas of red and dark fruits - wild strawberry, black cherry, blackberry - and blood orange. The more the wine aerates, the more generous it becomes. On the second nose, musk, apricot and candied orange covered in dark chocolate come together, simultaneously revealing a hint of candied fruit and chocolate, violet, rose, and even guava. This sophisticated scent evokes a timeless feminine fragrance. Finally, spiced aromas - star anise and pepper - emerge, complemented by a touch of kirsch and brioche.

On the palate: The nose lingers on the palate, thanks in particular to the violet and red fruits. The attack is vibrant, succulent and fiery in its concentration. Pomegranate, Morello cherry and dried flowers assert themselves. Notes of strawberry tart and crème pâtissière then characterize the generous, velvety flavor. Rare Rosé Millésime 2014 finishes with a powerful, swirling, vinous tension, worthy of a fine dining champagne: chocolate, pink peppercorns and kirsch bloom on the palate. A wonderfully long, positive bitterness rounds off the tasting of this eccentric vintage.

Ratings & Reviews

97 Points - Wine Spectator:

"Bursts with vibrant energy as soon as this hits the palate, yet is refined and elegant throughout -- akin to a prima ballerina's marriage of stored power and grace. Reveals a lovely range of strawberry coulis, blood orange granita, raw almond, honeycomb, smoke and chalk notes framed by chiseled acidity and carried on the vivacious, finely detailed mousse. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Drink now through 2038. 50 cases imported." - Alison Napjus (December 2023)

96 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:

"The 14th vintage of Rare, the 2014 Champagne Millésime Rosé has 9 grams per liter dosage, and most of the Pinot Noir in it comes from Verzy, with the red wine coming from Les Ricey. Pouring a brilliant orange/pink hue, the wine is juicy and fresh with aromas of wild strawberry tart, graham, blood orange, and a hint of cardamom. Medium to full-bodied, its mousse is inviting and adds just a hint of spice character, with notes of grapefruit pith on the finish. A bit more reserved on opening, it will benefit with more time to open and show its best, but it has a very attractive structure. Drink 2025-2040." - Audrey Frick (November 2023)

95 Points - Wine Advocate:

"Elegant, vibrant aromas of strawberries, confit lemon, dried flowers and blood orange preface the 2014 Brut Rosé Cuvée Rare, a medium to full-bodied, enrobing and elegantly vinous Champagne with integrated acidity, fine mousse and a long, saline, mouthwatering finish. This charming rosé is full of promise and will develop beautifully over the next 10 years." - Yohan Castaing (October 2024)

94 Points - Decanter:

"A slightly darker, fruit-laden Rare Rosé than in 2012 or 2008, thanks to the 18% red wine addition from Les Riceys. There's a tender, juicy cherry, Victoria plum and strawberry tart fragrance here, detailed with touches of smoke, toasted almond and char. The clementine zest of the Chardonnay is quietly lifting and brightening the palate, which shows plenty of approachability already at this young stage. Less reductive than the previous editions, the red fruit character could develop with some spicy intrigue, although its fleshy fruitiness is hard to resist now. Disgorged in March 2023 with 9g/L dosage." Drink 2023-2033. - Tom Hewson (October 2023)

94 Points - James Suckling:

"The fourth vintage of Rare Rosé, showing notes of cherry blossom, rose hips, black currants, cherry stones and some balsamic alongside star anise. Lovely perfumed character on the palate, with roses coming to the forefront. Soft bubbles. Bright and open red fruit. 60% chardonnay, 40% pinot noir, mostly from Montagne de Reims, with 12% red wine from Les Riceys. 9g/L dosage. Delicious now." (July 2023)
