About the Winery:
Ama is an old, fortified village situated near Radda and Gaiole in the heart of the Chianti Classico region. The Castello or Castle of Ama is surrounded by the beautiful Tuscan countryside and sits 12 miles northeast of Siena in the hills of Gaiole. This is the heart of Chianti Classico, a bucolic rolling landscape of woods, vineyards and olive groves. The property is owned and operated by the husband and wife team of Marco Pallanti and Lorenza Sebasti. Over the last quarter century they have replanted all of the vineyards and upgraded all of the winemaking capabilities to make this one of Tuscany's showcase producers. The vineyards are divided into five important parcels; San Lorenzo, Bellavista, La Casuccia, Bertinga and Montebuoni.
About this Wine:
Direct descendant of “Castello di Ama Riserva”, with this wine we have returned to produce a Chianti Classico Riserva. “Castello di Ama Montebuoni” was born – with 2018 vintage – with the aim of having a wine that can have the depth of the austere “San Lorenzo” combined with the drinkability of the young “Ama”.
Fruity and persuasive in the aromas, it reveals the quality with which it is made to the taste. For us, “Castello di Ama Montebuoni” is the most honest representation of the elegance of Sangiovese in our terroir.
Ratings & Reviews
94 Points - James Suckling:
Very pretty aromas with flowers and perfumes as well as the classic cherry character of sangiovese. Medium body, with ultra-fine tannins and a finesse and focus. Lovely now.
92 Points - Vinous Media:
The 2020 Chianti Classico Riserva Montebuoni offers a compelling mix of dark Ama fruit intermingled with a good bit of energy. Dark fruit, leather, spice, graphite and dried herbs are nicely delineated. This is an especially savory, at times somber, Riserva with a good bit of aromatic intensity and some tannin that needs time to resolve. (Drink between 2025-2035)
92 Points - Wine Spectator:
High-toned and racy, offering blackberry, plum, earth and hints of chocolate and spices. Though light in weight, this red shows fine intensity and a chalky feel on the long finish. Sangiovese and Merlot. Best from 2025 through 2038. 400 cases imported.
92 Points - Decanter Magazine:
While Montebuoni is one of the estate’s vineyards, Arturo Pallanti considers it more of a fantasy name, declaring that at the Riserva level, it shouldn’t be considered a ‘cru’. Indeed, it doesn’t demonstrate the profundity of the Bellavista or Casuccia bottlings, however it is a delightful, elegant package that is comfortable in its own unique charms. Pretty perfumes of violet, lavender and orange repeat on the palate, where crunchy acidity underlies cherry skin and raspberry. Hints of smoky wood waft unobtrusively, and soft, plush tannins cleanse the mouth. It finishes with a burst of spiced dark plum. 2024-2031.
