About the Winery:
Capezzana is located in the DOCG region of Carmignano, 12 miles west of Florence. Next to the Chianti district, Carmignano is Tuscany's smallest and oldest DOCG. Wine has been produced from this region since the days of the Etruscans, although today the region actually requires the addition of Cabernet Sauvignon to its wines (rather peculiar for Italy). The winery's history is almost as long - during the Renaissance, the property was controlled by the Medici family. Today, Tenuta di Capezzana accounts for 70 percent of the DOCG wines produced in the area, and the property is run by the Bonacossi family - son Filippo runs the vineyards, daughter Bernadetta makes the wine, and (Countess) Beatrice handles commercial matters.

About this Wine:
Villa di Capezzana is the flagship wine of the Tenuta di Capezzana estate and representative of Carmignano's greatest quality. This wine goes well with all meats in general and with cheeses. Intense ruby red, elegant, with notes of black cherry and raspberry well blended with ripe fruit. Soft, enveloping in the mouth, with soft tannins and good body. Acidity is present, but well balanced by tannic richness. Long finish, with an aftertaste that tends towards sweet licorice.

Varietals: 80% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon

Ratings & Reviews

94 Points - Vinous Media:
"Opening like a veritable spice box, the 2020 Carmignano Villa di Capezzana entices with its autumnal blend of allspice, clove, and star anise before giving way to steeped plums and sage. It’s silky and refined, with supple textures and ripe red and blue fruits that swirl across a stream of vibrant acidity. It leaves a pleasantly chewy sensation while finishing with fine-grained tannins and a staining of primary concentration. Wait a full minute and hints of white pepper still linger. Wow. While richer than usual and easier to appreciate out of the gate, the 2020 is balanced for a long and steady evolution." - Eric Guido (Mar 2024)

93 Points - James Suckling:
"A solid, focused and compact red. Red berries, warm herbs, earth, mushrooms and baking spices dominate on the nose, following through to a full body with fine, slightly chewy tannins. Concentrated and dense, with a solid frame of tannins for the fruit and spices on the long, funneled finish. From organically grown grapes. Try after 2026." (Jul 2024)
