About the Winery:
Founded in 1893, the Cantina Terlano winery is now one of the leading wine growers’ cooperatives in South Tyrol, with a current membership of 143 growers working a total area of 190 hectares. That is the equivalent of some 1.5 million bottles of wine a year. We and our members have long had a strong focus on quality. That has attracted praise and recognition on the Italian and international wine markets, and in spite of its relatively small size, Cantina Terlano is now well established in the world of wine.

Winemaker Notes:
“Delicate as the fine inclusions of quartz in Terlano’s volcanic porphyry rock - that is our Sauvignon Selection, which does full justice to its name. Quarz offers a combination of fine texture, depth and salty aftertaste that has given this noble white an international reputation.
Rudi Kofler

Vinification:
Manual harvest and selection of the grapes; gentle whole cluster pressing and clarification of the must by natural sedimentation; slow fermentation at a controlled temperature and aging on the lees for nine months partly in big wooden barrels (50%) and partly in stainless steel tanks (50%); blending three months before bottling.

Ratings & Reviews

95 Points - James Suckling:
A sophisticated sauvignon with a complex and aromatic nose offering notes of glazed citrus and stone fruit with honeysuckle and melon skins. It’s full and structured on the palate with vivid acidity cutting through. Creamy with the texture of a ripe nectarine and a tense mineral finish.

94 Points - Wine Advocate:
"The Cantina Terlano 2021 Alto Adige Terlano Sauvignon Quarz is a very exact and precise expression, with tropical tones, crushed stone, tomato leaf and green papaya. There is a hint of sweetness like you might get with candied pineapple or mango ice cream. I have always felt a special connection to this wine. A dusting of pulverized quartz stone appears on the close." - Monica Larner (Apr 2024)

93 Points - Vinous Media:
"The 2021 Sauvignon Blanc Quarz is deeply alluring, with a rich mix of savory herbs and grapefruit rinds lifted by a cooling whiff of white smoke. This is potent and supple with medium-bodied weight and a pretty inner sweetness, verging on decadence, yet is balanced by a stimulating core of zesty acidity. Candied lemon and lime resonate throughout as a burst of salty minerality and chalk dust adds perfect contrast. Like most vintages of Quarz, this will cellar beautifully over the medium term. That said, there’s no harm in enjoying it now in this wonderfully primary state." - Eric Guido (May 2023)

93 Points - Wine Spectator:
"This has lovely harmony to the flavors of melon, kiwi fruit, Meyer lemon peel and hints of chive blossoms and toast. An enticing white, deftly knit with rapierlike acidity and salty minerality, this is long and creamy on the palate, with spice, mineral and herb accents on the lasting finish. Drink now through 2031. 5,833 cases made, 250 cases imported." - Alison Napjus (Oct 2023)
