The winery's flagship wine takes its name from the estate, the ca'marcanda, the house of endless negotiations. The name refers to the many hours that Angelo Gaja spent convincing the property's previous owners to sell the estate vineyard that produces this wine to him. This vineyard is one of the stoniest sites of the Ca'Marcanda estate in Castegneto Carducci (Bolgheri). Its 100% terre bianche (white soils) are ideal for producing long-lived, structured wines.
Grape Variety/Varieties: 50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc
Length/Type of Fermentation: Separate for the three varieties, which are blended in the January or February after the harvest.
Length/Type of Aging: The wine ages in new and slightly used barriques for 18 months and undergoes at least 12 months of bottle aging at the winery before being released on the market.
Ratings & Reviews
95 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"Angelo Gaja and his daughter Gaia Gaja don't make Bolgheri Superiore wines, although this wine qualifies as such. The 2013 Bolgheri Rosso Camarcanda shows the pedigree of the vintage and the importance this top shelf wine deserves. This is an exceptional blend of Merlot with Cabernets Sauvignon and Franc that is challenging to taste next to the 2014 Magari, which is so radically different. Camarcanda reveals Gaja's signature touch with full and generous fruit layers that are backed by spice, leather, tobacco and lovely succulence. The wine is integrated and smooth with long-lasting favors and beautiful tannin management. Despite its heft, the wine is elegant and silky through and through." - Monica Larner (30th Oct 2016)
95 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine:
"Very Bordeaux-like, this red offers plum, cherry, coffee, green olive and spice aromas and flavors. Taut and dense, with a long, fresh finish that exudes cedar, sandalwood and green olive notes. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2018 through 2030. 1,200 cases made." – BS (Mar 2017)
95 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
"The 2013 Ca' Marcanda is explosive with wild and medicinal herbs, menthol, and red plum. Medium to full-bodied, its more lifted feel is also more forward driven and linear. This continues in the red-fruited realm on the palate, with currant and red raspberry seed as well as gripping and angular tannins and fresh acidity. There is a cooling nature about this wine, with a vibrant energy that I absolutely love. Drink 2024-2044." - AF (1/26/23)
