Calon-Segur is one of the oldest properties in the Medoc dating back to the middle ages. In the 18th century, the estate fell into the hands of the Marquis de Segur. Despite the fact that he also owned the more prestigious Chateau Lafite and Chateau Latour, the Marquis famously said: "I make wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is in Calon. Today the bottles iconic label depicts a large heart around the estate's name.

Located in the north of the St-Estpehe appellation, this historic Third Growth winery got its name from the small river boats, or calons, that were used to ferry timber across the Gironde River estuary, which the Calon-Segur vines overlooked.

Ratings & Reviews

95 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
"Another second wine from this brilliant vintage that tastes more like a grand vin, the 2018 Le Marquis de Calon Segur offers a full-bodied, ripe, incredibly sexy profile that carries terrific amounts of currants, plums, graphite, and leafy herb-like aromas and flavors. A blend of 53% Merlot and 47% Cabernet Sauvignon brought up in 30% new French oak, its a head turner thats going to drink spectacularly well right out of the gate."

92-94 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
"The 2018 Le Marquis de Calon-Segur is a blend of 53% Merlot and 47% Cabernet Sauvignon (14.9% alcohol). It is anticipated to age for 17 months in barriques, 30% new. Deep purple-black in color, it gives up opulent scents of Indian spices, menthol and plum preserves with a core of creme de cassis, baked cherries and raspberry pie plus a hint of sandalwood. Big, rich, full-bodied and voluptuously fruited in the mouth, it has bags of black fruit preserves and exotic spices with a firm, plush frame, finishing long with a minty lift. Definitely one for the hedonists!"

91-93 Points - Vinous:
"The 2018 Le Marquis de Calon Segur is a drop-dead gorgeous second wine from Calon Segur. Bright, lifted and punchy, the 2018 has so much to offer. Expressive floral, savory and spiced notes from the Cabernet add shades of nuance to a core of dark red and purplish berry fruit. Beautifully textured and inviting, the Marquis is positively stunning in 2018. The blend is 53% Merlot and 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, mostly young vines planted between 2008 and 2012. It is a gorgeous second wine from Calon Sgur. Tasted four times."

93 Points - Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider:
Much better in bottle than in barrel, it is hard to believe this is a second wine. The spice, smoke, tobacco leaf and red fruit nose pops with ease. But it is the palate that steals the show with all its supple, lush, fresh, juicy, vibrant, pure red fruits. The wine blends 53% Merlot and 47% Cabernet Sauvignon is Classified Growth in quality.

93 Points - Wine Enthusiast:
"The second wine of Chäteau Calon Ségur, this is luscious and massively dense, with black-plum fruits backed by velvet tannins and acidity. It shows power along with good potential for aging. Drink from 2026." -Roger Voss (5/1/21)

93 Points - James Suckling:
"Plenty of blackcurrant and blackberry aromas with hints of black truffle and mushroom. It’s medium-bodied with an attractive core of cool fruit and a flavorful finish. Wet-earth undertone. Second wine of Calon Segur. Drink after 2025."

91 Points - Decanter:
"A luxurious wine with really a rather beautiful texture to the palate. You get the sweetness of the black cherry and damson fruits - gorgeous flavours that make this a hedonistic style of Marquis de Calon that will make lots of people very happy."
