About the Winery:
Cà Romé is a true family winery, nestled in the heart of Barbaresco. It was founded by Romano Marengo in 1980 after a 30-year career in the wine industry, during which he dreamed of making his own terroir-driven wines. Today it is run by Romano’s children, Winemaker Giuseppe Marengo and Director of Operations, Paola Marengo. The winery’s vineyards in Barbaresco and Serralunga D’Alba consist of historic, marl-heavy soils and produce world-class, terroir-driven Barbaresco and Barolo wines.
About this Wine:
This is a very special selection of late-ripening Nebbiolo Michet grapes exclusively released in only the best years and dedicated to Romano’s mother, “Maria from the township of Brun” in Serralunga d’Alba. Density is 5,000 vines per hectare, with a very low crop yield of 1.2 kg per vine. The wine shows incredible concentration and typicity: beautiful, deep ruby color, very intense, persistent bouquet, complex and elegant, full body, and a hallmark personality. A deeply satisfying wine with excellent cellaring capability.
Ratings & Reviews
95 Points - James Suckling:
"Fresh cherry, crushed herb, dried flower and citrus peel aromas and flavors. Some tree bark, too. Medium-bodied, firm and linear on the palate with chalky tannins, that are a little chewy. Quite delicate with juicy red cherries and hints of dried herbs on the silky finish. Needs some time to express itself. Better after 2026." (Jun 2023)
92 Points - Vinous Media:
"The 2019 Barbaresco Maria di Brun is a potent, strapping wine. There's plenty of fruit impact and overall intensity, but the tannins are also pretty intense. I am not sure they will ever soften entirely. Dark red cherry, cinnamon, pomegranate, new leather and sweet oak are front and center. It will be interesting to see if time softens some of the edges, although I am not sure that will happen. (Drink between 2024-2034)" - Antonio Galloni (Oct 2022)
92 Points - Decanter Magazine:
"Just 2,200 bottles made of this sweet, earthy Barbaresco, with a waft of balsam then concentrated, intense red and black berry flavours wrapped up in grape and wood tannins. The high acidity lends balance but it still needs time for the fruit to emerge fully. Long, fresh finish." - James Button (Jun 2023)
91 Points - Wine Enthusiast:
"Aromas of cranberries and raspberries dusted with dried thyme and wild roses spill from the glass. As the aromas evolve, the pretty palate showcases the high-toned red berry fruits framed by supple tannins and electric acidity finishing with subtle hints of crushed chalk." - Jeff Porter (Dec 2023)
90 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
"The 2019 Barbaresco Maria Di Brun has a musky bouquet of baked cherries, baking spices, cedar, and balsamic herbs. It’s a grippy little wine, with ripe, building tannins and a drying feel. Persistent, but a touch clunky, it has an autumnal feel with some more developing notes. It is classic Barbaresco and good for drinking over the next several years. (Drink between 2024-2027)" - Audrey Frick (May 2024)
