About the Winery:
The story of the Gaja winery can be traced to a singular, founding purpose: to produce original wines with a sense of place which reflect the tradition and culture of those who made it. This philosophy has inspired five generations of impeccable winemaking. It started over 150 years ago when Giovanni Gaja opened a small restaurant in Barbaresco, making wine to complement the food he served. In 1859, he founded the Gaja winery, producing some of the first wine from Piedmont to be bottled and sold outside the region.

Moving beyond his native Piedmont, Angelo Gaja was compelled to risk starting something new. Inexorably drawn by a unique piece of land and the promise of his dream – to bring his winemaking expertise to Maremma – he made the long drive from Barbaresco to Bolgheri. After purchasing his Pieve Santa Restituta property in 1994, Angelo purchased a second Tuscan property, naming it “CaMarcanda” in 1996. Located in Castagneto Carducci in Bolgheri, this land is ideal for Bordeaux varietals, allowing perfect ripening conditions to produce elegant wines suitable for aging.

The winery's flagship wine takes its name from the estate, ca'marcanda, the house of endless negotiations. The name refers to the many hours that Angelo Gaja spent convincing the property's previous owners to sell the estate vineyard that produces this wine to him. This vineyard is one of the stoniest sites of the Ca'Marcanda estate in Castegneto Carducci (Bolgheri). Its 100% terre bianche (white soils) are ideal for producing long-lived, structured wines.

About this wine:
Vistamare (sea view) recalls the sense of cheerfulness typical of the sunny days on the Italian coast. It is a name ironically borrowed from the real estate world, where the sea view is mentioned as the added value for excellence, the ultimate in luxury.

First Year of Production: 2009

Vineyards: In Bolgheri, both on dark soil rich in lime and clay, and white soil full of limestone, clay and stones.

Appellation: Bolgheri

Tasting Notes:
The 2021 Vistamare is strikingly lively, showing a straw yellow color with green nuances. 2021 Vistamare is complex and layered, based on chamomile and Scoth broom, followed by pink grapefruit and other citrus fruits. Intensely fragrant with hints of peach, apricot and cantaloupe. It is creamy and smooth, with a refreshing acidity and a long intriguing saline finish.

Ratings & Reviews

94 Points - The Wine Independent:

"The 2021 Gaja Vistamare - a white wine from Gaja’s Ca’Marcanda estate in Bolgheri - is an intriguing blend of three white grape varieties, Vermentino, Viognier and Fiano, that really seem to work well together. It has a pale white-gold color, and a delicate nose of lightly smoky, fresh, green fruit. The palate is vibrant, fresh and juicy with a delicately creamy texture and crunchy green apple and white peach flavors. There is a twist of pink grapefruit bitterness on the finish, but it is all very deftly done and elegant. With this 2021 vintage both the blend and the texture seem to be getting better and better. This is a beautifully made wine." (Dec 2022)
