Notes from the Winemaker:
Controlled and Guaranteed Designation of Origin
Owned by Poderi Boscarelli since 1988, the “Vigna del Nocio” is located in the eastern area of the company and extends over approximately 4 hectares at an altitude of between 350 m and 280 m above sea level. Since 1991, we have been making special selections of Sangiovese Prugnolo Gentile in the vineyard, based on both the soil and climate conditions and the different Sangiovese clones present. We produce an average of around 5,000 bottles a year. Each one combines complexity, great aging potential, and the elegance and fragrance of pure Prugnolo Gentile.
Soil characteristics
These alluvial soils have different structural characteristics from the rest of the farm: they have clearly distinct sandy and clayey areas.
Type and selection of grapes
100% Sangiovese. Careful selection in the vineyard, aimed at maximizing the expressiveness of these diverse soils with varying harvest times, defines the production of different pure Sangiovese Prugnolo Gentile cuvées.
Vinification
After destemming and gentle pressing, the grapes are fermented in oak vats filled to no more than two-thirds of their capacity, using native yeasts. Fermentation lasts approximately 10 days at a controlled temperature of 27 to 31 degrees Celsius. Brief pumping overs are performed initially, along with manual cap punching. Maceration, in some cases, continues for another 7 to 10 days after fermentation.
Aging:
The individual Cuvée del Nocio wines are aged separately in Slavonian or French oak barrels with a capacity ranging from 5 to 10 hl. Maturation lasts 18 to 24 months.
The final blend is made at the end of maturation, using different percentages of the individual Cuvées depending on the characteristics of the harvest. The wine ages in bottle for approximately one year before being released for sale.
Optimal maturity
The aging potential of our Nocio is measured in decades, however the optimal ripening period we recommend varies depending on the year, in any case from the fifth year following the harvest.
Ratings & Reviews
97 Points - James Suckling:
"A dark, austere wine with super-youthful style and vibrant complexity. Pure black cherries on the nose are allied with earthy minerality. Full-bodied with firm and velvety tannins, a very juicy and supple palate, concentrated fruit and a crisp finish. The aftertaste is tight and thick yet ripe. Best after 2025." (Oct 2024)
97 Points - Wine Spectator:
"Macerated cherry, strawberry, pomegranate and sweet spice flavors are allied to a silky texture in this sleek, powerful red. Underscored by muscular tannins, with ample fruit for balance. The superb, complex aftertaste picks up mineral and wild herb elements. Still youthful, this appears to be a long-distance runner. Best from 2027 through 2045. 600 cases made, 100 cases imported." - Bruce Sanderson (Oct 2025)
94 Points - Wine Enthusiast:
"The nose is layered with sweet and tart berries, dark chocolate, iron-rich tilled soil and anise, while the palate is bright and juicy with plenty more fresh berries, and also brings explosive acid, salt and a peppery heat that blazes past tightly coiled tannins all the way through the finish." - Danielle Callegari (Jul 2025)
