About the Winery:

Founded by Guillermo Eguren, who is a self-made "bodeguero", coming from a family tradition of vine growers. Today, the fourth generation of the Eguren family, Marcos Eguren, is the winemaker and director of the winery. Sierra Cantabria has come to the forefront of Spanish wineries in the last 15 years. This is from the extreme care that they give to their vineyards, located in the best terrain of Rioja, the savoir-faire of Marcos Eguren, and his price-conscious policies.

Vineyards are located in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, one of the most famous towns in Rioja, known for the quality of its grapes. The grapes are sourced on 267 acres (108 ha), from 1,440-1,740 ft. above sea level (480-580 m), spread among the towns of San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Labastida, and Laguardia.

About the Wine:

Sierra Cantabria Rosé is a classic Rioja clarete produced from a co-maceration of red and white indigenous varieties from the Eguren family's extensive vineyard holdings in San Vicente de la Sonsierra. This wine pays homage to the classic claretes of yesteryear, when field blended vineyards would be co-vinified.

Location & Vineyard:
San Vicente de la Sonsierra Estate owned vineyards surrounding the village of San Vicente de la Sonsierra, sandwiched between the foothills of the Sierra Cantabria
mountain range and the Ebro River.

Blend: 55% Viura, 35% Garnacha, 10% Tempranillo

Viticulture: Practicing organic dry farmed viticulture with certain selective biodynamic
practices. Vineyards trained as spur-pruned goblet vines as well as high density trellises. Manual work and harvest, with no mechanization whatsoever.

Winemaking: The grapes undergo rigorous double-manual sorting, both before and
after destemming. The mixed white and red varieties macerate at low temperatures for eight hours in stainless steel. The grapes are pressed in a horizontal pneumatic press. Fermentation takes place at low temperatures in stainless steel tanks and is inoculated with yeasts selected from their vineyards and cellar.

Ratings & Reviews

91 Points - Decanter Magazine:
"Expressive, aromatic rosado laden with red and black berries. The palate is bright with berries, with a hint of pomegranate and even grapefruit. Tempranillo, in my opinion, does not make the best rosados, but this blend (with 60% Viura and 30% Grenache) is a smart, pleasurable solution. Full-flavoured and food-friendly." - Sarah Jane Evans MW (Mar 2024)
